Parent: It is definitely not a school for everyone, but for the kids who want what it offers - lots of highly accelerated STEM, rigorous curriculum in every subject - and don’t miss having music or team sports (in MS) - it's a gem. For a student to do well and enjoy his/her experience at The Science Academy STEM Magnet, they do have to *want* to be there and take school seriously though. The kids whose heart is not in it and would prefer to focus on humanities or arts, and are at the SASM only because of their parents' dreams, can be quite miserable at this school... The teachers are excellent and there is lots of support available for those who need a little extra help. The principal and other admins are nurturing and communicative. PTA is active. Electives are great! Besides (major award-winning!) robotics, engineering and similar, theater and art are also offered, as well as a number of other eclectic options. Senior: When I started at Renaissance Arts Academy in 6th grade, I had realized it was much more different and unusual than typical schools. At Renaissance Arts, our grade levels are mixed resulting in a variety of inclusive academic thoughts and conversations between grades 6th through 12th. Because our school does not have interior walls, conversations held are shared with others, drawing connections between the scholars' academic perspectives towards each subject. Senior: I’ve been at MSA-3 since middle school so I’ve seen a lot change over the years especially teachers and faculty. Some were good things and some were bad. The longer you’ve been in one place the more you start to realize that you’re getting older and you start to understand things more. Something I really like at MSA-3 is the teacher and how there’s very little students in each class. It’s a great way to create bonds with everyone good relationship with the teachers. Some things I would like to see change is the way everyone and by everyone I mean faculty talk and communicates with each other. Middle school student: I first entered Comienza during my 6th-grade year. In my opinion, it was the best middle school option available to my family. Teachers were always willing to assist students and encourage them to ask questions, staff and custodians were friendly and hardworking, and admin/ops took incidents like fights and threats within the community very seriously. Academics-wise, there is a great effort to encourage independent thinking but too many accommodations like endless retakes and weeks to finish 1 test. As for the students, the majority are nice kids who have attended the school for their entire lives. Some kids are meaner, as expected per middle schoolers, but there is support in the case of bullying. Lunch is hit or miss but it's free and offered by a third-party service. Recently, there seems to be a greater effort to bring the school community together with fun activities like the quarterly crush parties, which improve each year, and themed dances with catering and live music.... Parent: I think the school is the closest you can get to a private school while being a free public charter middle school. The school’s use of the Merit/Demerit system, use of dress code, a large support staff, and strict adherence to rules and appropriate consequences when children don’t, makes it an extremely safe and enables the children to focus on studies. Their novel approach to instruction accommodates children who may struggles but also challenges those who are more advanced using a tiered structure with 4-5 levels per grade. The levels teach the same material but have more in-class assistance and move at varying paces. I really like the After School Program (ASP), since it’s not just a child-care service. It offers multiple clubs such as cooking, robotics, sports, and others. Their sports teams include soccer, flag football, and basketball with teams traveling locally by bus to compete. Senior: As I began high school, I knew that I had the opportunity to indulge in rigorous courses. I started taking online Dual Enrollment courses through CALS where I was given the opportunity to learn more about myself and passions. I explored the courses that were offered through my high school to learn at a more rigorous level, but I felt as if the topics offered such as Chicano Studies or Dance weren’t something I could become passionate about. I researched different topics and ultimately discovered the Business section. I studied concepts such as Accounting and the Principles of Selling and these topics became a turning point in my life because they taught me more about how the world works, how to make smart decisions, and inspired me to learn more about how to create a real impact on people’s lives. Sophomore: In my experience, Academia Advance has significantly improved my academic performance and surroundings. Our kiddo is our first and only kiddo, so this school experience is our only experience, but I also went to public school and in the same north east Los Angeles area as this school is in, so I have some ideas of expectation. I'm an anxious parent with tons of trust issues. Always second guessing and always apprehensive about diving into something somewhat new or experimental-ish. Our kiddo has had some hard experiences in school so far, but every experience has been met with guidance by the staff and sincere respect for all sides. Senior: Even though Aspire Pacific is a very small school, everyone there is incredible; you can always count on the support of the adults in the area and they will make you feel welcome. With the help of the provided tools, students can easily make up missed coursework and enroll in college courses to begin preparing for their future college experiences. Apart from a few negative situations caused by few individuals, everyone at this school gets along well and supports one another. All of the adults treat the kids really well and are also really helpful when it comes to issues at home or at school, which is something I personally experienced. They have helped me let go of all of my frustration and build up I had going in in my life.
