Alum: The school community is what made the school years very enjoyable. The environment this school created is beyond great. They make sure you’re on the right track to college, making sure you’re taking all classes needed to graduate while helping seniors with applications and the whole process of it. Even though the work may seem a lot it prepared me for college. I found the workload to be the same in college which help make the transitions much easier than expected. Additionally, the school prepares students with their public speaking skills without them even knowing. Having multiple presentations, speaking in front of a panel of teachers, speaking in front of people in the medical field such as doctors and more! The school has a very big emphasis in the STEM field holding activities in which their own students help expose the different careers STEM offers to the younger kids. Senior: It's not as big as other LA high schools, so it's a tight-knit community. Everybody knows everybody, so it's nice to always have people to talk to in my classes. With most of the teachers, it's easy to tell they care about their subject, but sometimes you might end up with a few that don't so much. Our sports programs have been colossally improving over the past few years, and it's so easy to join any team that interests you. LACES is diverse and inclusive, and dozens of student-led clubs dominate. The campus is small and easy to navigate. There are color coded buildings for different subjects! There's also a quaint garden where we're starting to grow vegetables and herbs. A big loss at LACES is school spirit. It's hard to come across with no football team, so cheerleaders step in on basketball games and tennis matches. Alum: The best part of that school was that the staff and administrators actually cared about their students education and their future. Our assignments were more complicated yet the teachers did their best to help us understand the curriculum. Our college counselors made sure everyone completed their fafsa and tried their hardest for the students to apply in colleges. The worst part of our school was that because of our new location (moving from one school to another; making it two schools in one building), the lower staff members had to be let go without a proper notice. Another negative effect from switching locations was that our school was not allowed to have the privileges of the other school. The other school had a football field, a baseball field, a soccer field, a dance room, and musics rooms; we were not allowed to enter those rooms because “it was a short notice and there wouldn’t be time to properly get those rooms”. Parent: Our child has been at Larchmont since kinder and has thrived. He went to the elementary Fairfax campus, a smaller campus with spacious classrooms, and he has loved the bigger Selma campus too. The leadership works hard to create an accessible and friendly atmosphere for the students and parents so there is a strong sense of community. The admin is collaborative and value parent input. The teachers are nurturing and attentive and know when to give students more help or more of a challenge. There are many enrichment classes (art, music, gardening, sports teams, band), a social-emotional curriculum and clubs. Most kids eat the (optional) lunch prepared in the Fairfax kitchen and is SO good. At Selma, our child has delved deeper into academics and developed new interests like government and digital media in clubs. Junior: What I enjoy most is the fact that no boundaries are put between subjects or students. All students can explore the same subject and yet still learn something. They have done an excellent job at involving the arts in our academics, and it has made me understand certain topics more than I used to. Sophomore: The best part about SOCES is that it is very diverse. There are many chances for you to start new friendships. I have built many relationships with teachers as well. There are also many chances for you to participate in school activities, like starting or joining clubs, doing a sport, or being involved in places like the robotics team, Academic Decathlon, or Speech and Debate. Something I think should change is giving students the preparation of choosing courses, especially for high school. As someone who just finished freshman year, I feel like if I had learned the requirements for high school earlier on, then I would have been more prepared. Senior: As a current student who has attended Lake Balboa College Prep since 6th grade, I can say that this school is different from a typical high school. Starting off, the school starts from kindergarten and follows up to twelfth grade. I’ve attended this school since middle school, and now graduating from here next year. Lake Balboa has provided me with great opportunities. They offer college courses, Ap classes, clubs, and sports! Sure it’s a small school, therefore everyone knows each other which I love because it makes us feel like family. The community itself is welcoming and the staff is friendly. Teachers definitely care about their students and are in communication with their parents. POLAHS offers amazing educational programs that are completely free to student an example of this is the CTE programs that include construction, welding, Marine trans, Video production, Graphic design, and Photography. Sophomore: Alliance Marc & Eva Stern Math & Science School is notable in the way teacher's care for their students, showing each day to teach undauntedly, with compassion, which is respectable considering the different educational backgrounds of their students. They aren't annoyed or frustrated at the fact that topics are unknown or hard to understand many of them could be seen as role model in the way that they act towards students and work toward a safe environment. Disconnection from faculty to students is found to support hostility between the two. The office is reluctant to help, rude or passive aggressive, they enforce hostility in an environment which is a safe space. Everything has a fault to it which can't be helped I can't say these things as a student without acknowledging the needed efforts to meet the school halfway. Senior: USC Hybrid High College Prep is a pretty good school. They support students in any way possible which include academics and their future. As a student, I have experienced that teachers actually care, value, and want the best for us. There is always help available to those who need it through "flex," a time where we can attend teacher's office hours and do work, and their clubs like Trojan Tutors, where students can be of help for their peers. This school does a really good job of helping us have a better future by guiding us and our families through the process of getting into a 4 year university. Alum: Da Vinci Communications High School is a tight nit learning community that focuses on maintaining a positive school culture and teaches through project based learning. The best part about DVC is definitely the teachers, who care about their student's education and their mental well-being. The pathways offered at DVC are also a huge plus, because marketing, computer science, journalism, and multi-media can interest a wide array of students. However, some downsides are the lack of AP classes, or rigorous classes in general. The honors classes are very weird, because there actually isn't a specific honors class. Every student takes the same class, and if one wants to receive honors credit, they have to attend a separate 30 minute bi-weekly meeting outside of class (still inside of school hours) and complete more work on top of the regular class they are already in.... Junior: Overall the experience at Math and science college preparatory high School, also known as MSCP, has been amazing. The teachers are all nice and very friendly. One of my favorite parts is that the school lets it's students select a stem related pathway of study. Personally I picked the biomedical pathway and my experience with it has been stressful but exciting. The school really offers lots of opportunities for the students. However if I had to complain about something it would probably be the scheduling of the different events; sometimes the staff doesn't have an exact time for certain events but most of the times the time issue is solved in a few minutes. In summary my experience with MSCP has been great, the students are very accepting and friendly, teachers and staff are also very friendly. Junior: I honestly would recommend Alliance Judy Ivie Burton Technology Academy High School to anyone as the the school is really preparing me for college. I would’ve never attempted an AP class if it was not for my counselor. Although they are strict ,it’s for a good reason. They see potential in their students and want to push them to be the better version of themselves academically and personally. Hearing from friends from other schools and comparing our difference experiences in school, in their eyes my school is extremely strict. Which I do understand but at the same time with the whole college route we are far ahead of them, my friends often are confused on what process of college applications i’m talking about as they haven’t been introduced to it yet, and will most likely be introduced to it beginning of freshman year. Parent: We couldn’t be happier at CHAMPS. My daughter is finishing her freshman year in the dance academy, and she’s thriving academically, socially, and in her dance and theater studies. The staff and administration is friendly, fun, caring, great at communication - just top notch. She selected the theater academy as her top choice but was placed in the dance academy, which was a lucky thing for her. The dance training is excellent, with a variety of styles, guest instructors, fun development opportunities, and a great team of teachers and students - plus college credits! Senior: Being in a STEM based school has helped me progress both personally and academically. The staff, albeit nauseating to deal with at times, are well-meaning, competent in their respective fields of work, and more than capable of catalyzing student growth via their guidance and assistance. The English and physics teachers just about rounded out the staff experience for me---it was a delight working with them. The facility itself isn't much to write home about, though its smaller-than-usual size lends itself to the provocation of a feeling of belonging within students. Senior: One of my favorite things about King Drew is the amount of opportunities they give to students. Whether you're a freshman looking into socializing in clubs and participating in sports, it seems they've got everything you would look for in a high school. Teachers are willing to stay afterschool for tutoring to further assist students, and the effort most faculty workers put in to make a difference is heart-touching. I enjoyed how most events are student-led to help make themselves stand out. The only few issues I've had would be the bathroom policy and strict dress code. Bathrooms would be limited to the first and third floors, and the dress code only allows white, bumblebee gold and black colors for clothing such as shoes, shirt and sweaters, but that didn't make too much of an impact during my four years here....
