Senior: Horace Greeley High School is academically very strong. If you go here, you will end up at an extremely good university and probably be set up for life. Most teachers are amazing and usually understanding. However, coursework is rigorous and you need to work hard. Students often compare themselves to each other so there may be some toxic energy within the school. Social life is average, although it can feel "cliquey" at times. If there was one thing I could say HGHS needs desperate improvement in, it would be diversity. The school is almost all white and taught by white teachers. Sophomore: The academics and college readiness are fairly strong overall, but the people in charge of administration are uniquely terrible at their jobs. Though there are many issues in the way the school is run, the most important one to me is clubs and activities. Rye is not a poor town by any means, and our school are increadibly well funded. That being said, clubs at Rye High School see little of this money. This year's budget allocates $40,000 just for a graduation ceremony, but does not even grant clubs $15,000 in total. In addition, students are not even able to fund their activities themselves. The administration is extremely strict when it comes to bake sales, and heavily discourages outside funding. When asked if students can pay for things themselves, the administration has also said that students should not have to for fear of students not being able to afford these things (despite providing no alternatives).... Senior: The education at Edgemont was fantastic, and I feel extremely prepared to go into college and then post-college whatever job I may search for. The teachers are passionate and knowledgeable and there are lots of opportunities to expand beyond the curriculum offered. Although it is a small school, there are still a decent variety of classes, and I've never found myself searching for something that wasn't there. However, Edgemont's community is generally very stressed out and sleep deprived, leading to a depressed student body and a generally not great vibe. There are plentiful resources for students mental and emotional healthy, but I've found that most students choose not to participate in those resources. Personally, I've had no issues with the culture in Edgemont, as I have plenty of friends and family who helped me get through the tough parts of high school, but I know a number of people who had a very different experience at Edgemont.... Alum: I have had many different experiences at the Pelham Memorial High School and most of them were great. The faculty and staff were really nice and strict, they really cared for our safety. There were a lot of safety protocols and strict policy of who enters the building which was great. It is a diverse school so there a lots of different people from different backgrounds you could meet which I believe is a rare and good thing. The school is in a really safe neighborhood so I always felt safe which is the most important thing. The teachers really cared about your studies and was always there for help. The sports at the school was phenomenal, many different games to watch and there were always students and parents supporting the teams. The crowds were exhilarating. The worst parts of high school for me was the work. I didn't like doing work, especially writing because it isn't my favorite, and the lunch for me. Alum: I learned a lot at MHS and am fortunate to have gone to such a good public school. Those 4 years are crucial for a student’s development, attending a school where you feel supported and safe helps you gain importent soft skills you can take with you after you graduate. I know my counselor cared about me and wanted to see me succeed- however some of my friends who had other counselors would say differently. I felt like a lot of my friends had access to more college prep resources because of money so I felt a little left in the dark when starting the college process. I wished the school would have done more to help us figure out what everything meant and its implications. For example things picking a major or figuring out our potential vocation.Every school has a mix of teachers, I had some who I adored and some who I didn’t- only there to teach lessons/ hear themselves talk which can really take a toll on you. Senior: Blind Brook High School was an amazing experience for me. The classes and teachers were so helpful and definitely prepared me for each upcoming year. Extra classes are being added to Blind Brook so that there are more options for students to choose from, which can possibly lead to finding a new passion or future career. I would want to see a change in the number of students attending Blind Brook, the school is really small which causes only around one hundred students to be in each grade, this can be hard for people who move here to make new friends since everyone has known each other since kindergarten. Parent: This is a beautiful town and school district. The teachers are caring and go out of their way to help students succeed, especially at the high school. International families from everywhere in the world give the district a more cosmopolitan atmosphere than many suburbs. It is small, so students and families get to know most everyone in their grade. HS academics offer many AP-level classes and interesting electives, though what others point out about grade comparisons is also true as it is a competitive district. It has very strong theatre, music, and fine arts programs given its size. On the downside: sports offerings are average; admin is just ok and could be more proactive in ensuring kids don’t fall through the cracks; board runs are popularity contests, which gets some doozies elected; and, given its size, it can be gossipy — but that can be avoided if you don’t do the typical parent scenes. Alum: I think that overall the Ardsley High School had a very strong learning environment and I felt comfortable asking my teachers and peers for help. They were always available for anything during the ninth periods, which I greatly appreciated. However, there are some kids that made the experience miserable. Ardsley is unfortunately overrun with privileged annoying kids who never took responsibility in their lives and whose parents defend them blindly. The teachers and staff usually side with them but also fail to take charge in dealing with serious transgressions. There is also a bit of racism in the school that people pass off as “joking with my friends” but nobody really stands up to the mean kids and tells them what they’re doing is wrong. Senior: Yorktown is the safest smallest town in the United States. Yorktown High School is no exception to this. All of the teachers, faculty, and alumni are respectful, understanding, and accommodating. I have never had any issues with other students or teachers, but if there ever was, the district would do everything in their power to resolve it. I have learned so much from Yorktown High School not only academically, but morally. I have learned what it means to be a good person. All of the teachers are amazing in their own ways. They all have different styles of teaching, and are usually willing to adapt to students needs. They are also accepting of all students, and are strong advocates for anti-bullying. They are understanding of mental health issues, and have many resources to help. I struggled with anxiety for most of my high school career, and thanks to my understanding and accommodating guidance counselor and social worker, I was able to overcome it. Parent: Hastings High School is a small school located just north of the city of New York. It is attached to Farragut Middle School which has grades 5-8. Our experience with this high school has been great. The teachers seem to be very dedicated and work with the students based on their individual needs. There are a lot of opportunities for students to get extra help or join clubs after school. Being there through Covid we felt assured that they were doing their best to keep everyone safe. The nursing staff had an especially difficult time and went above and beyond. We have 2 kids currently attending the school who play sports and participate in school activities, like pep rallies and school dances. Junior: I love the high school and the district. My daughter had opportunities not seen in other schools. She has been able to take college level classes and achieve college credits. Because she was able to take these courses she has narrowed down what she wants to major in in College . This was a big win for her. My daughter has taken financial and career management classes which will be a big asset for her in life. I feel these type of courses should be offered at every high school . These are such and important skill to learn early on. Hen Hud is still a small district and so the high school still has that family feel to it. Its a very friendly, nurturing school which challenging courses available. It also offers other avenues for children who would like to learn a manual skill and achieving certain degrees before finishing high school. Senior: I would say my time at Sleepy Hollow has been filled with ups and downs. My freshman year got cut short due to covid-19, but beyond that coming back into full-person school was great. I was able to make a lot of memories here and will carry them on. The school lacks diversity for black students and teachers and SHHS requires a lot of funding which can be discouraging in terms of field trips and fun activities.
