Senior: Mass Academy is an amazing school! The collaborative environment and assignments that are geared toward challenge and real-world applications make being a student here an inspiring and enjoyable experience. The academics are top-notch and challenging, and everyone will help each other. With the small size of ~ 50 students per grade, you get to know each of the faculty members and your classmates personally. The faculty offer a lot of support with independent projects and the college application process. Senior year at WPI prepares you well for college. Although you are always busy as a junior, most of the projects are truly enjoyable because you get to work in a group, including when designing an app and assistive technology device. There are also great classes in the humanities and language, so students gain skills in math and science as well as writing, English, history, and Spanish/French. Senior: Yeah, Lexington high school is stressful. Not necessarily because of our academics (though many of our teachers are Ivy/t20 grads) but because of the students. We’re very competitive, and there’s an external drive/stress culture depending on who you hang out with. It’s very common for us to send most of our class (even the “popular” and “slacker” kids) to top schools for their major. We have no school spirit but that never mattered to me. Not many people attend football games or care about traditional high school popularity, which is refreshing. And our school is so big that you will definitely find your crowd. Finally: yes, we’re known for our bad mental health, as expected from a top high school. But many teachers are really understanding of your circumstances, so don’t be afraid to reach out to them! Sophomore: Unlike many high schools in the area, LS provides students with a "college-like" selection of many courses, such as English. We have about 20 courses to choose from, ranging anywhere from Expository Writing to Modern-British Literature, mostly structured as semester-long classes so students can experience a more diverse educational experience. The teachers are phenomenal, and really take advantage of the flexible curriculum to teach students more than just the required. The counseling department is also stellar, really making me feel more prepared and less stressed about college. Alum: As an Alumni of the School the academics of the school are pretty great. The teachers generally care a lot about students, and you can really get an individualized experience. I had some excellent teachers at this school. However, there are some problems with the school which are AP selection and Extracurriculars. Smaller school size decreases the availability of some APs. This means that some APs like Calc AB, Lit, and History are always offered, while other APs like any AP Physics, and Calculus BC are unavailable. However, other STEMs like Chem and Bio are still offered. Additionally, the School does not allow AP loading, meaning that students can graduate with at most 9 APs over 4 years of High School. The other weak area of Pioneer is its lackluster club scene. During all 6 of my years at Pioneer there was no consistent structure for clubs. Alum: I loved the people, and the education itself was incredible. I was challenged and supported academically in order to better succeed in college. I loved the teachers, and their willingness to help you in any way they could really was apparent. As an alumni now, I am proud to say that I went to such a well rounded school, and their initiatives to promote diversity and empowerment really added to my takeaways, and experience as a whole. One thing that I did not love about Bromfield was that it was often strict and biased on expectations. For example, we had a dress code that was often only directed towards female students. Additionally, if you were a star student or athlete, you were often exempt from punishment or rules, or had a slap on the wrist, whereas for anyone else, the consequences would have been much greater. Junior: Overall, my experience at NHS has been a relatively good one! I've never had significant problems with my teachers, although some are definitely better at teaching than others. However, that can be said about most schools. I'm incredibly grateful for the open-campus policy as it gives students more freedom to choose a place they are able to better focus or accommodate their needs. That said, Needham, which can be labeled as a "liberal" town, still has its fair share to do in combating racism and other forms of discrimination. While being a white-dominated school itself does not warrant any problems, I have personally witnessed the more covert prejudice that runs within the student population. It's subtle, but it's there. Luckily, from what I've heard from friends, the school offers many great guidance counselors. Senior: My overall experience at Groton Dunstable Regional High School was amazing. The teachers and staff could not be more helpful. Extra help was always given to students in need. I made many new friends throughout the four years of my high school career. Playing volleyball was a great way to meet new people and enjoy the sport at the same time! One of my favorite things in High school is attending sports events. There are football games every Friday home and away as well as volleyball and soccer games throughout the week. Another great thing was there was little to no bullying. Students always got along with each other even if they were not friends. Lastly, clubs and activities are a huge thing. I participate in volunteer club, yearbook club, and best buddies club. These are also great ways to meet friends and get involved in something you like.
