Parent: I find it disheartening to see a one star review for MATES on this site. As the 1 star review parent notes, MATES is a Charter School run independently from the District. As such, the Administration and Staff wear many hats and collaborate with many parties to maintain and efficient, compliant and productive school environment in concert with the governing Board of Directors. Decisions are driven by the Charter, LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan) set by the State of CA, the multi-year Education Technology Plan and many other benchmarks.
The MATES mission statement is: Instituting a vision that welcomes innovation, honors the past, transforms the future, commands achievement, and empowers all children through the Arts and Technology. I'd encourage any prospective family to visit the campus, speak with a teacher, look to school performance and decide for yourself if MATES is for you. Our family experience has been outstanding and I'm confident yours would be too.

Senior: Oak Park Independent School is a very good school. The teachers and staff members are all very helpful and kind. It is a friendly, accepting environment and there is no tension or malice between the students. The needs of the students are all accommodated, including their schedules and classes. The work is truly independent for students to teach themselves, but sometimes this can be an issue. Most of the books are not teaching textbooks, and they are outdated, making it more difficult for one to grasp and truly understand the information on their own. There is also a lack of variety in teaching methods, most subjects being taught by only reading a textbook. Oak Park Independent School is a very good school, but the true flaw is the difficulty and lack of depth in some of the self-education, including in more challenging topics, like chemistry.

Freshman: I can't even begin to explain how much I loved Mariposa. I am a freshman in high school but Mariposa was amazing. I was actually excited to learn. You learn handwriting, handwork, religions and cultures, Spanish, writing, reading, math. In 5th grade we learned about ancient mythologies, and at the end of the school year, we were focusing on Ancient Greek mythology. We did a pentathlon where we learned how to throw a javelin and a discus, how to wrestle the Grecian way, and we did sprinting and the long jump. The curriculum focuses on teaching kids stuff when they are the most excited for it, and also on the kids social emotional development. Every kid in my class was brilliant and happy to go to school. Mariposa encourages parents to give their kids screens only on the weekends, so their growing brains won't be stunted by media. When I went to high school, I was more than prepared. I am so proud to have gone to Mariposa and to have the unique schooling and opportunities it gave me.
