Niche User: I may be a new kid but this school is pretty good so far; no real dress code because it's rooted in sexism, kind staff, and very little drama. I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the lack of diversity in classes. The school is predominantly white and upper-middle-class; often, as a lower middle class/student of colour, I often find myself reminding classmates of their privilege, and they don't take me too seriously. Parent: I have been so impressed with this school & the transformation it has gone through under the new principal. I would agree that in the past it has felt like a 'pressure cooker', but that is far from the reality now. Despite the small size, the school maximizes resources and has increased their programming. Our kids have recess and PE every day and the principal has grown the programs this year to offer maker space and full time art to the existing dance, music, and Latin classes. They also made a huge investment in tech and kids have access to new iPads/chromebooks in each classroom. The teachers are dedicated and I constantly hear of how they are attending trainings and trying new ways to teach students. The principal continues to push academic growth while also focusing on social emotional development of students. The overall feel of the school is warm, progressive, and my child loves school. Middle School Student: LaSalle II offers high school Algebra to seventh and eighth graders as a replacement to math if students score a passing grade on the entrance exam, have a passing grade in math in sixth grade, good behavior, and the sixth-grade math teacher believes the student would find the class beneficial. The school also offers a geometry class to the eighth graders that took algebra in the seventh grade at a nearby high school, Roberto Clemente High School, where students get dropped off at the high school at regular school starting time (7:45) and walk back to the school after the period is over to continue classes at LaSalle II. The teachers at the school show their passion for teaching with their efforts to ensure all students have a well understanding of what they are learning. Middle School Student: Im a 8th grade student graduating soon, I've been here since kindergarten. This school has great diversity, facilities, a library, large gym and a auditorium and sadly NO LUNCH ROOM. Classes are large and a bit overcrowded but students can still get help from teachers and other staff. There is a excellent community with nice teachers administrators and other workers. There is no advanced placement, but students who are ahead of their level can most likely talk to their teachers for extra more advanced work. Parent: My son will be going into 2nd grade at McDade. This school is the only reason we still live in the city. It's small close knit and very intentional about providing an excellent education for kids. When you have generations of parents and grandparents still heavily involved in the school, that speaks volumes. A great school is about more than high test scores, which McDade students have - it's about engaged and involved families, integrity, character, high standards and strong leadership. My son has a growing love for learning and is getting a holistic educational experience at this Chicago Public School; from academics, to learning to play the violin, to stem programs; It's truly a gem.... Parent: I can't say enough good things about this school. The sense of community is huge. The teachers and staff know all the kids and the families and kids have a nice community. I would definitely recommend taking a tour of this school, because it will be obvious as soon as you enter the building. My kids have thrived here, even during the pandemic.
