Parent: Our daughter graduated in 2022 from Cushing, transferring in after her Sophomore year at another solid prep school.She reclassed because she knew she would love Cushing and simply wanted to spend three years there, not just two. She drove the decision to transfer and did all the research, identifying two strong boarding schools. She wanted to board. Early on, we decided to focus on Cushing. In hindsight, it was the best decision we could have made. We found Cushing to be a very welcoming, caring community. Academics are rigorous as you want. Plenty of AP courses offered as well as advanced courses. Engineering was one of her favorite classes and helped her decide that a STEM career is what she wanted to pursue in college. Visual Arts programs offered are amazing. She enjoyed glass making, creating a few treasured gifts. She sang and did theater; Performing Arts also excellent. Athletics programs are strong. Senior: I have loved my high school years at the Winchendon school. The education was phenomenal and the opportunities I had are like no other school. I took part in different colabs which involved living as a homeless person, recycling wood from the forest into furniture pieces, up cycling clothes to trendy styles and traveling to Georgia to work in a non profit. I feel if I was in a public high school I wouldn’t have had these opportunities. It really changed my outlook and my passion. Senior: Trivium is a small school of about 75 students, but because it is so small, it is one of the greatest. Every student has an opportunity to encounter the great works of history, from Euclid's beautifully logical proofs to Longfellow's masterful poetry. The students are pressed in friendly competition on the athletic field or in the classroom through the kind of friendships that can only grow in an atmosphere like Trivium's that fosters love of learning and a deep respect for fellow students. Parent: My three children have been attending SLA for five years now. The school feels like family! All the teachers know and engage with my children, even if they haven't had them in their class. Because it's a small school the students get lots of one-on-one instruction and all can participate in sports or music, not just the top 10%. My kids are participating in the honors program and are on track to attend competitive universities--I attribute much of that to the extra attention they get. Parent: Our son attends the school and he loves it! He is excited to go to school each day and when we ask about his day he says, “It was amazing!”. We love many things about Applewild: excellent academics, passionate teachers, small class sizes, foreign language, art, drama, shop, and the sense of community. Children are taught to be confident learners and engaged citizens through the school's core competencies (be reflective, communicate, create, persevere, collaborate, and think critically) and core values (being respectful, fair, responsible, compassionate, honest, cooperative, and civic-minded). They're are not just words on the school’s website, they're fully integrated into everything the students do from community service activities (our son will be reading to Head Start students soon) to the day-to-day routines.
