The students, faculty and administration made her feel a part of the Shady Side community from our first visit. The culture at SSA is extremely welcoming and inclusive for both the student and their family—it’s truly a partnership. Academics at Shady Side are rigorous, but the support from teachers is unmatched. The school is rapidly growing, and it is evident that Aquinas' successes are growing as well. It might seem that Aquinas doesn't have as many opportunities in niche areas that future students are passionate about, as compared to other schools. Junior: I moved to Oakland Catholic sophomore year. I went to a school before that really did not match my needs. I knew someone from middle school that transferred here for high school. I always knew about the school, but never imagined myself there. I brought up the idea to my parents and they were hesitant. After months and months of conversation regarding the subject, they agreed to let me tour it. I still remember the day I toured, I was so nervous but pleasantly surprised by this environment. After the tour, I begged my parents even more to let me go. And my last day of freshman year my parents told me that I could go if I followed a list of rules they had for me. I've been here ever since and it has been an amazing journey. I've made friends I know I will have for life and amazing experiences and opportunities that not all girls are lucky enough to have. Parent: First and foremost, the environment at Harvest is hard to beat! No place is perfect, but boy does the staff love the kids and they try so hard to encourage kind and understanding behavior between the kids. I have several children in the school who have all attended since kindergarten. They all have different academic abilities and I have been pleased and thankful with how the various teachers have gone out of their way to help those who struggled and push those for who things come more easily. Senior: My experience with Imani Christian Academy has been great! The environment is very supportive and the staff are there to tend to your needs. The school is small, however, you are able to make personal connections with people. One change I would like to see is the level of education, clubs and activities, and diversity. Imani Christian does not offer AP courses for people who should have the chance to experience being in an AP class setting, as well as provide a selective list for clubs. Parent: Having a background in education, I was very dedicated to touring/researching as many schools (private & public) as I could to make sure my children were in the best academic atmosphere. Without a doubt, Alpha School offers the best balance of rigorous academic experience while maintaining a strong focus on developing moral and kind individuals. The administration is very hands-on which encourages stronger bonds between students and adults at the school. This is the only school that offered an actual stand-alone STEM curriculum, instead of tacking it on to science class. Another selling point was that it is independent of the arch dioceses, so it is not threatened by regrouping and closures. I also like that my children are exposed to other children from around the city, not just nearby neighborhoods. Families travel from Fox Chapel, Butler, and Moon to have their students attend Alpha, and after my first tour there, it’s obvious why. It’s the best kept secret in the North Hills!... Parent: Both of my daughters have gone to Jubilee. My older one did K-3rd in public school and she Hated school and was struggling academically. We transferred her to Jubilee for 4th-6th grade and she now Loves learning and has overcome her reading struggles. She graduated from Jubilee with honors. The small class sizes allow the teachers to help each student on an individual level and they make learning Fun for students! I also appreciated the emotional and spiritual support the teachers and staff gave to my daughters throughout the years. Freshman: I chose to go to Carlow University because of its amazing child education program. Along with the hands-on learning and Academic success plan set up for me, I am able to focus on my classes while doing what I love to do, which is working with kids on campus.
