Alum: A school with very accomplished teachers, highly capable students, and some problems. Academics are absolutely first-rate, and academic integrity is very seriously enforced, far beyond the standards of my college (a top Ivy). However, as at many Quaker schools, the school politics are stifling and highly punitive to students. It is expected and openly stated that students have neither privacy nor rights either in or outside of school to express themselves outside the School's tight political norms. Running afoul of this, whether deliberately or accidentally--or far in the past--results in purges; that is, expulsions. Further, although it takes abounding pride in its value system, the School is largely unsuccessful at transmitting to students any genuine values other than the do-or-die importance of academic achievement. Finally, Sidwell is far from alone among area schools in having disproportionately many suicide and drug deaths among its young alumni. This must never be ignored.... Read 78 reviews

Senior: Words cannot express how grateful I am for Georgetown Preparatory School and the faculty that work here. I transferred to Georgetown Prep as a sophomore and that came with its own challenges. Being a transfer student can be daunting, although I had nothing but support and kindness from the community at Prep. The teachers and faculty at Prep are genuinely invested in the future of their students. I have seen not just a community here, but a family. No matter the obstacles, the students and teachers here at Prep are determined to see each other through the hard times and the good times. Academically speaking, Georgetown Prep is rigorous and enriching. The curriculum is what you make of it, if you invest the time and effort into the Prep academics, you will greatly benefit. Parent: Current parent here. It’s a special place. Really doesn’t feel like there’s anything quite like it in the city. The character development is part of everything that happens there and it’s incredible. Feels like no teacher or administrator ever misses an opportunity to really “dig in” with the boys. You feel that when you first set foot on campus. Academically, it’s wildly impressive. Boys are working hard on very advanced material, but the model and excellent teaching makes it doable. Sophomore: Overall I have enjoyed my time at Gonzaga. I have participated in sports and other extra curriculars that have increased my sense of community and been enjoyable experiences. Another positive aspect is the extensive opportunities for service such as the homeless shelter that is on Gonzaga as well as immersion trips to underserved areas across the country. One major area that needs to be improved is administration and teachers. Some teachers at Gonzaga are completely unfair, rude, and make learning completely worse. Parent: We were immediately drawn in by the warm and welcoming community at Burke. My daughter is thriving at Burke, both socially and academically. The environment is warm, nurturing and supportive. Her teachers push her but also give support when needed. She is actually interested in what she's learning and is excited about her assignments. Senior: Templeton Academy is a great PBL school, and it does an excellent job of preparing students for the world. The school's foundation is solid and supportive; it's also very open and relies on students' trustworthiness. It mostly succeeds in engaging and challenging students academically. The teaching methods are hands-on and encourage social and academic participation. The teachers are great and always helpful; they learn about each student and build connections. Although the school has its advantages, it also has some disadvantages. Staffing is not always consistent, and the location is in a busy downtown DC area, so safety when entering and exiting the building is not always guaranteed. The school is still in its early stages and is still working out its issues. Overall, Templeton Academy is a well-built school that encourages learning and strives to do its best for its students by providing them with the best education and experience to face the world and easily adapt to college.... Works Here: I've been teaching in New Hope Academy for 30 years and am still impressed with the level of support and love of the administration and staff. The students also are generally enthusiastic and interested in learning, due to the investment of the teachers. All of our children went to this school and now the grandchildren. Senior: I think this school is really promising and a great thing for Muslim kids to have. The only thing I wish to see change is more activities, sports, and events to be made and done by the school and administration, and not all have to be done by the students. Student-led activities are great but they're not permanent also they can be too much responsibility on the students. I think its crazy that there is not even one sport for the girls and that for high school we don't even have PE. Also just in general we should have more permanent clubs and activities set in stone by teachers and admin, I remember before we used to have field day and festivals set by the school. I really enjoyed my experience in middle school and high school at Yeshiva of Greater Washington. I had amazing teachers, principals and support.
