This is our 6th year at Westminster and we have been very pleased with our decision! Parent: Our children graduated in 2016 & 2018 & AIS keeps on giving! They have a great network of friends and connections all around the world. It's true that the IB curriculum is challenging but (& this is unusual) the entire school follow it, not just an elite few, so the level of IB expertise, resource and support is unparalleled. There are myths about the language programs, you really don't need to be a linguist! Ours had no 2nd language when they joined, one finished with a bilingual IB Diploma, another took standard level for DP. AIS prepared our kids well for universities in the US and abroad & the school gave us all a really interesting, supportive community. Parent: Our children started GAC in 6th and 9th. After a year and a half I’m very impressed with the leadership, teachers, academics, and co-curriculars. Our children are very different; one is academic & artsy and one loves sports more than school. We chose GAC because it would be a great fit for both. As we go into the second semester of year 2, both kids are thriving! They have found great community and tried new things. My athletic child has discovered a passion in film editing and my theatre kid played 2 sports! We are thrilled to see them grow academically, spiritually, and socially. Senior: Marist provides an excellent, holistic education. The academic rigor is renowned in the area, but there are plenty of supports to help students in any subject like Peer to Peer tutoring systems. The athletics have a long list of state championships, and there is always a sport to join without tryout, like track and field for me. Even the art programs are highly talented even though they may not be as publicized as the sports. I have been in the marching band for 5 years and have made lifelong friends, and it's an honor to be a part of that community and now lead them as drum major. Everyone can truly feel like they belong in the "Marist Fam" whether in lacrosse, robotics, dance, or in their everyday classes. Parent: I’ve been an AGS parent for about 5 years, with my oldest daughter starting in 6th grade (now entering 10th) and my youngest daughter coming in one year later for 6th grade (entering 9th). This is a wonderful community for both my girls and me. Academically, they have excelled, and I think that’s because most teachers work quite hard to make concepts relatable and non-formulaic, but also because they make themselves available to students to come for targeted assistance. The school and grade classes are quite small, which I believe aids in the school’s ability to meet each girl’s needs. There is also a warm sense of community at AGS! From parent gatherings to annual school events to cheering on the girls who play sports, there’s always a way to connect with other families and support the school and students. Alum: I loved my time at the galloway school! The alternative approach to learning has really set me up well to succeed in life, and I made so many lasting connections! I truly looked forward to school everyday. However, current administration is leaning away from the 'galloway way'. Elliott Galloways vision of a school that accepts students for who they are, challenges them to advocate for themselves, and appreciates the value of love of learning is slowly slipping away. The reality is that every family at galloway is there for this alternative approach that admin is trying to do away with: currently they are trying to do away with the alternative grading system, no-cut policy, and discussion based learning. This saddens me truly, because those are the things that give galloway alum pride, and keeps families coming back to galloway, because it is a truly special place. Parent: Academically, we love the approach to learning and assessment. Teachers give detailed feedback and assess with a rubric. Students know what’s expected in advance. Our oldest (who can be an overachiever) keeps working to achieve the "advanced" description. Our youngest (who can be comfortable doing the minimum) can see how to keep working and stretch. From a community standpoint, we love that MV values diversity of thought, backgrounds, and experiences. Our children are learning to find connections and celebrate differences. Lastly, we love the school norms: start with questions, assume the best, share the well, fail up, and have FUN! In February we were away for a long weekend with another family who attends a school out of town. Their children’s holiday was one day longer than ours and we had to leave early. Other: Holy Spirit Prep is an absolute GOAT (greatest of all time). The community is amazing, the faculty is VERY high quality, and the students encounter an educational experience that is so unique and formative. The education is classical which inspires the children to question, reason, and marvel at what they are learning. Senior: Overall I have had a great experience at the Weber School. I have nothing but great things to say about the vast majority of the faculty aside from a select few. And of those select few I have many friends who love each of them, I personally just do not mesh with them. I think the school does a great job of hiring faculty members as well as investing considerable funds in improving departments and physical facilities. Some things that I think could be improved are the policies regarding accommodations. Sometimes they are too generous in giving these accommodations and it leads to many students being used to those when they go to college or the real world, and I believe that Weber could be a little less generous.... Alum: I attended Counterpane from age 5 through graduation (in 2016), and I did very well and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. It is certainly not for everyone; I saw students flourish, and I saw them really struggle, but that's not for lack of care or effort on the faculty's part. The thing is, the independent, Montessori method just isn't a one-size-fits-all. For some students, it is exactly what they need. For others, it's a constant struggle. For some, it may be a bit of both. If you (or your kid) think that Montessori and/or independent learning are a good fit, or are at least what you're looking to try, I can't recommend Counterpane highly enough. You'll come out of it with unique experiences, a good sense of time management and independence as it will be needed for higher education, hopefully a pretty good head on your shoulders, and, if you're lucky, lifelong friendships....
