Senior: Newman is a small private school with a high tuition cost, and because of that, diversity is lacking. But that comes with the territory, and you would face this issue at any private school in Nola. That being said, as a woman of color, I have always felt safe and cared for here, as they does their best to encourage diversity and inclusion. (let it be known that POC students at Newman have very different experiences and the same can't be said for everyone) On the other hand, the school offers amazing opportunities and great academics for students. It's a community in every sense of the word, helping students build relationships and achieve academic excellence with the guidance of their teachers. Each student can feel individually supported and inspired to do their best, and even though Newman isn't perfect, the positives out weigh the negatives by a lot, and compared to other schools in New Orleans, I'm confident in saying that this is the best. Senior: Mount Carmel is such a wonderful school, and I am so very blessed to be able to be there. One of the best parts about Mount Carmel is all of the opportunities. I have been able to meet many new people and try new things, but my favorite part is being able to dive deeper into my faith. My faith is so important to me, and Mount Carmel has so many opportunities to help girls get closer to God, such as religious clubs, retreats, religion classes, etc. The hardest part of my Mount Carmel experience was the heavy course load in my Junior year. I absolutely loved the social aspects of Junior year, but the academic work was very challenging. Mount Carmel has already made many great changes, but one change I would like to see is having the school host more events with other high schools. Mount Carmel has various sports events where people from different schools can intermingle, but one change that could happen is a game night hosted where students from other high schools can come to have fun.... Senior: I adore Sacred Heart, and have since I first came in middle school. My favorite part of coming to school here is the school traditions and culture. Rally, St. Philippine, Mater, Gouter, and so many others is what draws me to Sacred Heart. That, and the community. What's so wonderful about my grade in particular is that we are so different, but act just like sisters. We never sugar-coat our experiences and there have been fights, but we always make up and, no matter what, will always be there for one another. The only thing that needs to change is our music and arts offerings. As a student interested in arts as a career, it feels like the arts are always shafted by the athletics (which are phenomenal). Senior: St.Martin's was a great school but every school has some difficulties. The school went through many teachers in my time there, and different people in the head leading positions at the school which was hard to adjust to. But the major problem I had was the school this year my senior year taking away my accommodations I have had my whole life. It made it very difficult for me and it was not even a real reason they did so but after months of fighting and my mother and doctors backing me I got what I needed to succeed no thanks to the new head of upper school this year.... Parent: After a difficult time in a charter high school during the pandemic, my daughter transferred to De La Salle half way through her sophomore year. We have been amazed at the care and encouragement by teachers, and administrators and students alike. It has changed her as a person for the better. They truly individualize courses for each student. My daughter is fantastic in English and social sciences, and struggles in Math. They let her combine AP classes with regular math, and have offered helps along the way. She also attends NOCCA for creative writing, and they accommodate her. I find the students at DLS are happier than the average high school students. They find their people. It is less cliquey than many private schools. Upperclassmen are helpful to younger students. There is a positive atmosphere. No PDA, no fighting, and the administration works with parents of teens discovered using drugs before they kick them out. This provides an atmosphere where kids can learn and flourish.... Alum: Brother Martin is the best school to send your son to for high school. They will prepare your son to succeed and excel in college. The rigorous courses at Brother Martin made me study and work hard for the grades I wanted and I deserved. They have great resources like test prep where teachers get students prepared to take the ACT. They also have this thing called the Sophomore Writing Assessment (SWA) in English class where they will prepare your son to write an argumentative college-style paper. I graduated from Brother Martin in 2020 with a 3.00 GPA and a class rank of 146 out of 210. Don't let those numbers fool you, Brother Martin prepared me very well for college. I went to Delgado after graduating for a year and a half to get prerequisites out the way. Transferred to the University of New Orleans where I am studying to be a Mechanical Engineer and have a 3.60 GPA. Junior: I don’t you’d get the academic opportunities that you get here anywhere else across the state of Louisiana. The amount of standardized test prep a student will receive here is unlike any other. There’s a reason we have so many nation merit scholars and ACT 30+ students. The elementary faculty and staff got to know our daughter and went out of their way to let me know how happy they were to have us as part of their school. The environment is very nurturing to the whole child. The children receive classroom instruction, small group instruction, and one-on-one attention from the teacher. There are engaging activities to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom. The reading curriculum includes books with themes that promote social-emotional development all while learning literary concepts and critical analysis. All-girls environment gives the opportunity to cater the curriculum to engage girls. The campus is beautiful, and I feel that my daughter is safe there. Alum: This school transformed me as a person through the involvement opportunities of a small school, the teachers’ genuine care and devotion, and rigorous academic challenges. Speaking with a couple years of college under my belt so far, it was a lot easier to make the transition because the coursework we were doing at CES was already college-level, and to this day I feel more prepared to take on more advanced work. There was never a boring day at CES, it is such a lively and unique culture. I especially enjoyed the arts and drama programs and feel like they are one of the school’s greatest strengths. The campus is beautiful and I truly felt safe and at home there. Senior: Archbishop Chapelle is a very inviting and challenging school. They push their students to their best without overwhelming them, because of this they have mutiple AP programs in Sophmore-Senior year which challenges students to be their absolute best. Chapelle also provides a 35 minute period dedicated to seeking tutoring from teachers or making up tests and quizzes so you do not stress about missed work. Senior: During my 5 years at Northlake, I've been in a great environment where everyone wants you to succeed. Northlake is a college preparatory school, so faculty and peers push each other to excel. Everyone encourages each other to pursue their goal, and are willing to help each other to get there. Northlake is a small school, so everyone gets along and there aren't many cliques. Because of the more petite student body, students are able to get more one-on-one time with teachers to help with subjects. It is easy to see how much the faculty cares for their students and how much the students care for their faculty. There are many extracurriculars to get involved in and the food is great; giving three different options for lunch every day, ( they also serve breakfast in the morning). Senior: Personally, I think that First Baptist is an amazing school. I have attended First Baptist since the third grade and the school is capable of creating an almost family-like environment. Senior: My first year in Lutheran High school was during Covid and it was in person learning instead of online but the teachers and staff did everything in their power to maintain a safe environment for the students while giving us a the opportunity to experience the high school year. The teachers are very easy to talk to and very helpful, if I ever needed help with anything the teachers were very welcoming and open to hear what I had to say and talk to me about it. Throughout my junior year (my first year there) I got to know all the teachers and I could tell that they understood our struggles during the pandemic so they made days where we would play games and come to school wearing pajama, they would also give us activities in class so we wouldn't be stressed out about classwork and homework. This is my second year at Lutheran High School and my last year here as well and I am glad to say that I will be graduating here as a senior. Senior: Saint Scholastica Academy (SSA) is a private, all-girls, Catholic high school. I have attended SSA since eighth grade and I'm now a rising senior. My experience at SSA has been a joyful one of prayer, work, study, and community. SSA has helped me grow intellectually, socially, and in my faith. At SSA, it can be difficult to connect with others without participating in the many clubs, sports, and activities. One of my worst experiences at SSA was during my eighth grade year when the Covid pandemic began. Senior: My experience at Holy Cross High School has been great overall. There are a lot of programs at our disposal to help prepare us for college. My worst experience was when I was told to cut my hair. My hair does not determine how successful I’m going to be as long as I’m cleaned and groomed. There are many professional business men with long hair.
