Middle school student: I am a student that was at Black Rock Middle School for my seventh grade year and I will be back for my eighth grade. It’s a new school so there are things that will change and are different. One thing that I saw was very cool was how all of the teachers and student council members were trying very hard to build our new community. We had many fund raisers that made tons of money for organizations such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand. My courses and teachers were all very great too, except one. Math. I was in the advanced class called “Integrated I.” It was great except one thing. IXLs. They are a bad way of teaching students key concepts. The point system is degrading and it hurts many students mental health. Another problem that I saw arise was discipline. In the new school, with its open spaces and cool new furniture came issues with students thinking they were entitled to not cleanup after themselves. Alum: The academics are pretty good, and Council Rock has a reputation among state colleges as being challenging and demanding. Most AP courses are offered between the two high schools. The teachers at Council Rock are a hit or a miss. As a student, I encountered several facility members that played an active role in my education and my future. However, any student/parent is sure to encounter as many unmotivated and passionless teachers in the district. In addition, there is a severe lack of clubs and activities between the two high schools. Besides the ever-shrinking music and arts department and the standard honor societies, interesting and fun after-school activities are extremely hard to come by. As a student, I was disappointed by the general lack of creativity from facility and students. This may also be a statement on the great lack of diversity on campus. Senior: Rose Tree Media School District supported my educational, athletic and social growth. It was a diverse school with many opportunities for all students regardless of their interests whether it be arts, academics, science , debate, athletics, social clubs or leadership. Sophomore: I really liked how inclusive it was. There was a lot of focus on being a close and welcoming community. The district also provided many opportunities for the students to help the community and be involved in service. If I could change anything about the district, it would be the fact that there needs to be more addressing about mental health awareness. Also, I would make it so that everyone is given an equal opportunity to express their talents and skills. At many times, I felt like there were students who were not placed in the right math level, and they could do so much better if they were in a higher place. In other words, I think the district would be a lot better if it properly placed students into academic levels that best suited them rather than keeping all the students in one level. Senior: My experience with the Red Clay consolidated school district has been very long. Since I have experience with different districts I can say that ed clay has been one of the best. I love how diverse Delaware is in general but Thomas Mckean High School is the most diverse school i've went to since Brader Elementary. The sports experience has been quite incredible for Swim, Track, Tennis, And Cross country. The only team that needs some work is soccer and Football on teamwork and respectfulness. On another end we have the Theatre program. I think more funding needs to be invested in the arts but not just Theatre. Piano, Choir, Art, and Band needs some investments as well. I would love a bit more encouragement from kids and for the district to change the middle ground for grades from 25 back to 50%. That's pretty much what I have the Red Clay School District. Junior: New Hope-Solebury (NHS) is a very small high school, and I've seen a lot more benefits to that than negatives. NHS provides lots of opportunities to get involved in extracurriculars, leadership, and self-expression. Their academics are consistently ranked within the top 50 public schools in the state, and more often than not in the top 25. The faculty is very kind and willing to help all students. The sports programs at NHS are very small and are one of the weaker aspects of NHS, but the smaller environment gives everyone a chance to participate and for the stronger athletes to flourish. The smaller school environment allows for students to make friends easily within their classes and activities, and get involved in small groups through the many volunteer clubs at NHS. It seems as if all the staff members are on a collaborative mission to prepare the students for higher learning and they are succeeding in doing so. I have thoroughly enjoyed the events that the district and schools have run, including assemblies, competitions, etc. However, I feel as though the infrastructure of the schools themselves could be improved. Many of the older schools are packed to capacity and are not a comfortable environment for the students to learn in.
