Parent: My son was enjoying learning for the first time in his life. He felt like his teachers knew his name and cared about his success and that made a big difference for him. They also made learning fun and applied the lessons to his life. In public school they have assignments and sent you home, but in this school my son said the lessons were relatable and interesting. The teachers applied them to our normal life and so it made sense. He feels like AIA teachers teach people, rather than lessons and that has made all the difference. Junior: This school is amazing, and is perfect for anyone who has a super busy schedule, like me! I have a rigorous ballet schedule, that requires my focus and attendance most of the hours of the day. Because of FLVS, I am able to continue to pursue my passion for dance and get an excellent education, at the same time! The teachers are so dedicated and are constantly checking in on us, and providing help when needed. The course homepage is super easy to navigate around and makes learning fun and stress-free. It would be nice to see some updates in the course resources, however. Most of the videos and pictures are old, and sometimes glitchy. Sophomore: I want to emphasize one thing about HVS: its not for everyone. If you have a hard time staying motivated in traditional in person schooling, make sure you think hard before you sign up full time at this school. A big part of HVS is having the self discipline to get things done. The teachers are typically super helpful, but you have to attend live lessons and ask for help when you need it. With that being said, I think this school is great for motivated students who want more flexibility in their learning, either to work, volunteer, and generally decide how you structure your time. As long as you submit 3 or more assignments in each of your classes per week (you can turn in work 24/7) you'll remain in good standing. You can also resubmit most assignments up to 3 times for a better score which is awesome for High School students hoping to get a higher GPA. Parent: My kids have been with CCA Southern, CA for several years now, and really enjoy it. This school is definitely superior to the in-person options, and provide the flexibility they need as scholar athletes! Their teachers are kind and engage frequently to guide their education to ensure they remain on track. The courses are challenging, which will certainly prepare them for higher education. Both of my kids are in the honors courses and National Junior Honor Society, which places higher expectations on them which they appreciate. The school hosts field trips and various celebrations throughout the year so the kids can connect with their peers in-person as well. Not having the distractions they once had in the in-person experience, allows them to have a better handle on their mental health, connect with family, and enjoy the learning process again. Parent: Pros: Fantastic for letting children work at a pace that is right for them. This is a college prep school and the work required reflects that. The curriculum takes work both on the student's part and the learning coach's part. The teachers are helpful and care about the students doing well. Communication is wonderful. This school is a great choice if you want an online school with strong curriculum or if you want to homeschool your child but need some direction and want them to earn an accredited high school diploma. I do not regret choosing this school for my children and am excited to see where it takes them next! Cons: Most of the student body is in only one part of the state, leaving some students feeling disconnected from available activities due to travel times. Senior: Overall, the ability to work around my own schedule was the highlight for me. I did college and high school classes so it was nice to be able to take physical college classes if I needed to. Alum: I started attending Orange County Virtual School since the sixth grade and it has made my academic journey easier to control. Having 24/7 access to all my courses in one place was a significant improvement from moving throughout the school building looking for which class I need to head to next. Even though there is not as much socialization in a virtual school as in a brick-and-mortar school, the live lesson opportunities allowed me to interact with other students and get clarification on any concepts I was struggling with.
