Miles-Exploratory Learning Center
#336 Best Public Middle Schools in Arizona
Parent: This school is fantastic! It's a TUSD neighborhood school, but it's also a "Parent's Choice" school so you can enter a lottery to have your out-of-district child placed here.
Teachers here are SO caring. There is a large group at this school with hearing impairments, so sign language is used throughout the school. This means everyone learns sign language! It also means they are trained to deal with "differences" in the students. They understand different behavior and don't make kids feel like they are doing something wrong when they need to do something else to be able to pay attention.
Parents are very involved at this school, in fact a large number work at the nearby University of Arizona, so there is an emphasis on the importance of education.
Classes are organized by 3-year cohorts: K,1,2 are together, 3,4,5 are together: nice for consistency and expectations. The middle schoolers 6-8 are organized into 4 groups like Hogwarts - there's even a sorting ceremony on the first day.
