Parent: Now two yeas in, I am so grateful that my son is at SWS. It is an emotionally safe environment where the teachers and administration work together for the betterment of all students. They are easy to reach and connect with and I find them to be collaborators towards my son's education. Since there are no tryouts for sports, my son loves that he gets to play even though he might not make the cut at other schools. He enjoys being part of the athletics program, and the social connections and opportunities that come with that. The students are caring and have welcomed him, even though he knew nobody when he first arrived. It's good to see him in a place where he is supported socially, emotionally, and academically. Freshman: I like Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior high School. I find that they give students great support and resources, plus amazing opportunities to achieve what they want. But a downside is that even though we are high school freshmen we are not on the Davis Senior High School Campus. This can get in the way of taking certain advanced courses, participating in other opportunities like clubs and sports, and a whole overall experience that we are unable to take part in.... Niche User: This school was so different from all the other schools my friends from high school went to, but in the best ways. There weren't as many cliques or peer pressure situations that I experienced like my other friends did. I was able to make lifelong friends that I knew from kindergarten through high school. Middle School Student: I'm an 8th grader here, and I can say this: Chilton is an involved, resourceful, clean school that is excellent at readying students for the 'outside world.' I appreciate how Chilton takes safety seriously. They periodically have fire drills & Covid-19 measures. Sports are awesome too! The staff are kind, and understanding. I've met teachers that I'll remember for the rest of my life! Every person is valued, no matter their background, interests, or relationships. I would also like to note a new program for special needs students. This is the first time Chilton has introduced special needs kids to interact with middle schoolers. I am part of a class mingled with special needs kids our age (Physical Education class), and we are partnered up in pairs to assist the kids with P.E. It is a success, and I notice that they genuinely enjoy learning with us more than the adult helpers! I hope this continues after I leave, even to other schools! Middle School Student: The school is good but there are weird things going on there. Like one day with my friend we were walking together to the library at school after a club and here comes all of a sudden a golf cart with a custodian in it going really fast and almost ran us over on campus lots of times. Anyways the teachers are really good and teach well. Overall it was a good experience. But be careful because there are vapors there and it can be dangerous if you don’t pay close attention around you. Also the campus is the trashiest campus I have ever seen! Senior: I've really enjoyed independent study at Visions! All of my teachers have been awesome, I've felt very supported in my academics, and I feel like it was all around an excellent choice to attend as my high school. I love how independent it is; throughout high school, I've been able to work according to my own schedule, which I feel has really benefitted my learning experience. The only real downside I've noticed is that students need to put in effort to interact with their peers. Visions does a great job organizing in-person events, but because it's independent study, students have to put in the effort to show up. It's not like a normal high school where you're around other students all day. This hasn't been a problem for me personally--if anything, I feel not constantly being around other students has been very beneficial--but that might be more of an issue for more extroverted students. Parent: I can't say enough of the school and teachers. We had a rough year with being on DL but the teachers were great. When we went back to school for the 2 days and then the 4 days. Again nothing but support from the teachers to all the staff. Love the school and how they make the children interact. Even the shy kids like my son has opened up a lot. Senior: Natomas Charter School is one of the most welcoming and accepting environments to be in. The community is unlike any other, with so many opportunities to express yourself through your chosen art form. However, as a visual artist myself, our department gets the least funding out of the offered art forms (Drama, music, vocal, and dance). We can't go on the same fieldtrips, have as many showcasing events, and the teachers have to ask students at the beginning of each year for donations. We contribute so much beautiful work to our school, and deserve more recognition and financial support. In addition to this, the access to mental health support is limited. For all four years of my time at Natomas Charter, I have been fighting to gain a 504 plan to have accommodations. This has been a constant struggle with admin, with my concerns being dismissed and attempts to reach out not being responded to. Middle School Student: it's cool and the kids are nice. I haven't heard of any cases of bullying here. The lunches are good, they have been free this year what with the pandemic affecting wages, and you can buy treats like ice cream and sodas. My one complaint is that the vending machine NEVER works. Freshman: Spending my middle school years at Toby was absolutely amazing! The rallies and dances were entertaining, the sports teams did well, the clubs were fun, the theatre performances were entertaining, we had good character education, and most of the things I learned here I've used in high school and beyond. However, I feel like some of the teachers can be irrational at times, and bias against students due to one slip-up. I've had contact with many of the teachers on campus and most of them are absolutely phenomenal personalities, but in class, they are very disrespectful and rude to students. I understand that teachers need an iron fist sometimes in order to discipline students, but there is a line that some teachers have crossed in order to maintain peace.
