Parent: Joyful pursuit of excellence! My two daughters are attending Harvard-Westlake. One is in lower school and the other is a junior in the upper school. For the past several years they have been evolving and focusing on the health and well-being of the students! Late starts for high school students, days off for high school students, day trips to Disneyland! Head of School Rick Commons and Associate Head of School Laura Ross are incredible! The teachers are passionate, enthusiastic, outstanding (they often incorporate curbed grading) and there's a supportive team/learning specialists, psychologists who are there for students and parents no matter where they are on their journey! Parent: Our child has been enrolled at Oakwood since Kindergarten and we have had an incredible experience so far. Our little one is thriving! The teachers are so kind and smart, the staff is very supportive and responsive, and the community is beyond welcoming. We looked at all of the private schools on the east side of the 405 in LA and were most impressed with Oakwood! We have never been disappointed with our decision. There are of course bumps with every educational experience but the way Oakwood deals with those situations and the way they work on making sure they don't happen moving forward has been really differentiated. Parent: My daughter has completed her Freshman year at Marymount and I can't express enough how incredible the year was for her. Socially she made many new friends, who all have different interests, personalities, and goals. The young woman at Marymount really support one another and encourage each other to try new things. Academically, the faculty is extremely attentive to the students and work with them if they need extra help or explanations. Also, Marymount makes sure the students are on track for the college admissions process. They really get to know the students and help guide them every step of the way. I love the events they offer such as the Father/daughter dance, Mother/daughter brunch, and the Father's BBQ on campus. Hands down one of the best schools in the state - Coolest, kindest, and most well rounded kids, best facilities, tight-knit community, fantastic teachers and campus, and the best opportunities to excel in whatever you're interested in - kids here are so talented! Works Here: Buckley has an incredible community of faculty, students, alumni, and parents. I've worked at the school for several years now and have been so impressed by the caliber of my colleagues and students. In particular, I appreciate how our smaller size encourages students to take on more challenges; my students take rigorous courses while also participating in sports, playing an instrument, writing for the newspaper, and anything else they're interested in trying. Parent: We transferred here from a very highly rated public school. My children are thriving in the smaller environment, with staff not only respecting but understanding them as individuals. My children are high performers, and the teachers generally motivate them to work at their own best level. Many of the teachers are doing a spectacular job of teaching subjects in a fresh, compelling way. (Other teachers are fine. None to date have been bad.) My children have made down-to-earth friends. We as parents greatly appreciate the school doesn't overly emphasize fundraising. Just know the benefit of a small school can also be its drawback. There are clubs like cross country, volleyball, and flag football if your child is into sports. The admin staff members and teachers are genuinely friendly and interested in getting to know the student and his/her family. Kids love gourmet food prepared by amazing chef Hugo. During the pandemic, the school prepared a week's worth of lunches on Monday. Which was supposed to last for five days. Alum: I recently graduated from IH. I was a proud panda at the middle school and high school, and my experience at IH was one that I would not trade for the world. Although in the heart of Hollywood, IH felt like a safe haven for higher education. I constantly felt challenged academically, but not in a toxic manner. Healthy competition was present among students, both in terms of learning and athletics. IH truly shines in its art department (visual and performance). The teachers at IH are unparalleled. I keep in contact with a few of my teachers and I will never forget the information and morals they instilled in me. Teachers want and make an effort to connect with students, that is something incredibly special. In terms of theology, IH makes the subject approachable for all students. Alum: This is an incredible private school. I attended public school for two years and then my sister and I were accepted into Wildwood. From second to twelfth grade I had an amazing experience here. There is little diversity due to the massive price tag, so we were two of the few people of color at school. The teachers are not paid enough, but they were so passionate and lovely. I never had a class that was larger than 20 and the teachers gave personalized time to each student. The project-based learning helped me become a great critical thinker and I learned how to make a great presentation! The sports were lacking, but that is because Wildwood is an art/STEM school, not an athletic school. The funding is endless, parents are very involved, and they absolutely prepare students for college. The upper school (6-12) does NOT have a gym/cafeteria/yard etc. It is in West Los Angeles and the facility used to be a warehouse, so there is little natural light in most classrooms.... Senior: It's not as big as other LA high schools, so it's a tight-knit community. Everybody knows everybody, so it's nice to always have people to talk to in my classes. With most of the teachers, it's easy to tell they care about their subject, but sometimes you might end up with a few that don't so much. Our sports programs have been colossally improving over the past few years, and it's so easy to join any team that interests you. LACES is diverse and inclusive, and dozens of student-led clubs dominate. The campus is small and easy to navigate. There are color coded buildings for different subjects! There's also a quaint garden where we're starting to grow vegetables and herbs. A big loss at LACES is school spirit. It's hard to come across with no football team, so cheerleaders step in on basketball games and tennis matches. Alum: The best part of that school was that the staff and administrators actually cared about their students education and their future. Our assignments were more complicated yet the teachers did their best to help us understand the curriculum. Our college counselors made sure everyone completed their fafsa and tried their hardest for the students to apply in colleges. The worst part of our school was that because of our new location (moving from one school to another; making it two schools in one building), the lower staff members had to be let go without a proper notice. Another negative effect from switching locations was that our school was not allowed to have the privileges of the other school. The other school had a football field, a baseball field, a soccer field, a dance room, and musics rooms; we were not allowed to enter those rooms because “it was a short notice and there wouldn’t be time to properly get those rooms”. We were looking for a diverse school for both students and faculty and we were referred to visit New Roads by a friend of the family. After going through the interview process, we quickly learned that this was no ordinary private school but rather a unique learning institution that would help us parents raise good humans!
