Senior: Being a woman of color at Groton definitely comes with its challenges, and I won’t sugarcoat it. The facilities, teachers, and classes constantly push you—socially and academically—beyond your limits. This push has its ups and downs, but overall, Groton has elevated me more than it’s brought me down. I’ve grown into a great writer, a confident speaker, and a natural leader in any setting, whether it’s the classroom, the sports field, or extracurriculars. That said, the class differences and cultural isolation are real. These issues aren’t addressed by the faculty, and students are often too uncomfortable to unpack them (which, honestly, I get—it’s a super privileged environment). But with such a big focus on diversity, I think this should be one of Groton’s main priorities moving forward. Aside from that, Groton is tough but rewarding. Parent: Small school with a concentration of super bright, motivated and interesting kids with diverse skills and interests. Classes are rigorous and teachers expect a lot of diligence and high quality in written work and class participation. If your kid thrives on learning and academic challenge this is a wonderful place. Sports are not a major focus and sometimes we think the school should either put more focus on valuing sports or just reduce the requirement and give the kids more time for homework and other activities. Another important point for families looking at schools is that while Commonwealth is small, it is not a hand-holding, coddling kind of place. To be successful kids need to be or learn to be independent and self-organized. There is help if they ask — but they need to know when then need it, and ask effectively. Middle school student: Nobles is for college prep. The kids are very good academically. The school is a perfect balance between sports and education. The hockey and golf programs are phenomenal! The facilities are world class and they blow away most colleges. The rink on campus is beautiful and brings a real big piece of Nobles culture because students attend the hockey games. Senior: Deerfield is one of the most academically focused schools, filled with opportunity, and prepares it's students to go to some of the most prestigous colleges. As a post-graduate, coming to deerfield has opened my eyes to the best that education has to offer, and given me connections and opportunities I would find no where else. The facilities and dedication to student's wellbeing fuel my drive to succeed, and I could not recommend Deerfield enough. There is something for everyone here, and if somehow you find yourself not fitting with a certain activity or interest, the support and access you have in creating your own "thing" is astronomical.... Alum: Personally, I loved the Middlesex School. I think the best part of my experience there was the way in which students were encouraged to try and do a little bit of everything and truly explore all of their interests. I was able to participate in varsity sports, theater, student government, on top of taking multiple AP courses. Middlesex is a great fit for students who are not just looking for one thing but want a holistic experience that will give them the opportunity to truly "find their promise" as the school puts it. The school is not perfect, it is difficult to actually do everything and have time to relax, but it is a perfect place for the most ambitious of students. The school could certainly improve some things, it has gotten fairly informal with its dress codes, and, like most elite prep schools, is not necessarily the most diverse place and certainly is a cultural learning curve for people not used to this environment. Senior: I think Mass Academy is an amazing school, but it's not necessarily right for everybody. For me, I loved the challenge I was presented with, and I loved my teachers, but while the teaching style worked for me, it might not be for everyone. Mass Academy uses a lot of project-based learning, meaning that there may not be nearly as many guidelines for what you are supposed to do to solve a problem, which can be both a blessing and a curse. For certain projects, you won't get a lot of guidance, which is a good, real-world learning opportunity, but it stressful when you experience it for the first time. Thankfully, the Mass Academy staff and community are all very kind and supportive and are very willing to sit down and help you make sure that you ace your classes (given that you also put in the work). Parent: My daughter is finishing up her time at BUA and looking forward to attending a fantastic, top rated college. BUA was the first school which her mother and I both found what we wanted. In my case, a great "fit" for my daughter, and in my wife's case, great stats/outcomes. We have found it to be a supportive and accepting community. It is certainly demanding, but resources are available. For example, my daughter has both tutored other students and been tutored, and the teachers and staff are quite approachable. For most, I expect the end result will be a very well prepared student and a someone who will adapt well and contribute much to their future communities. The affiliation with BU is valuable, with the opportunity to take actual college classes in Junior and Senior year. The admissions staff has a great sense of which students will thrive at BUA, and I think prospective students and parents will know whether it is the right school after the interview process and school visit.... Parent: My daughter started as a 10th grader and we were very worried about her adjusting as a newcomer when most students start as 9th graders. In her new school environment, it only takes a couple of weeks for her to be fully adjusted. All the people including the faculty and staff live like a family here as the school is very small and cohesive. My girl really loves her school life and enjoys all the academic curriculum and sports in her new boarding life. Senior: Milton is an awesome, amazing school that has numerous opportunities if you look for it. The academics are top-tier in science, english, history, languages (specially chinese, french, not much spanish TBH)... and definitely not strong for math, unless you enter your freshman year in a higher math placement (the higher courses are pretty good). Alum: I came to NMH having never gone to private school before, and it changed my life. I just graduated. The relationships that students make with faculty are truly life-changing and the academics, food, arts, facilities, and many athletic teams are excellent. Like many of my classmates, I’m matriculating at one of the best colleges in the world in the fall specifically because of my time and education at NMH. I’m a scholarship student and I never experienced any maltreatment from other students because of that fact. The school goes out of its way to embrace racial, gender, economic, national, and religious diversity. The mantra of “empowering students to act with humanity and purpose” is as genuine as it gets. Obviously, it’s not a perfect place. The school administration is often too harsh on students and a fair number of students choose to complain instead of embracing the school culture—you get out of it what you put in.
