Parent: Our son went to Williston last year for a repeat junior year. Though his public-private high school in Vermont offered ample opportunities, the Covid experience had impacted his academic sequence and experience. He'd also come to realize Vermont's competition levels and potential for exposure didn't align with his aspirations for next-level play. Williston came well-recommended by a college friend whose son had been their for a few years, especially for its community. Even more than meeting our expectations for the sports, we were thrilled to see the community and academic experience energize him to new levels. Senior: I am currently a senior at MacDuffie, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the past four years I have spent there. The academics are excellent, as there is a wide variety of classes supplemented by a substantial offering of honors and AP courses. The teachers are absolutely excellent as well. They truly care about what they are teaching, and they will do whatever they can to help their students succeed. As for extracurriculars, there are many ways to get involved with sports, the arts, and more outside of school, whether it is on a team, in a club, or in a CAP (co-curricular activities program). The arts facilities leave a little to be desired, but it is amazing what the arts teachers can do with what they have! Overall, these past four years have been amazing, and while I definitely feel as if MacDuffie has more than adequately prepared me for college and beyond, I will still miss MacDuffie. Go Mustangs!... Junior: The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School as an amazing school for those who want advanced education, and small, more intimate classes. PVCICS teaches all grades from K-12 with a range of immersion of the Chinese Mandarin Language. The highschool (9-12), takes honours classes in 9th and 10th grade, and the 11th and 12th graders are all enrolled in the IB Programme which teaches college level classes, along with college credit that can take of 1-2 years off your college degree. The class sizes are also very small and intimate, as the grade sizes range from 10-50 students total. Senior: Overall Longmeadow High School was a very immersive educational experience. I was very involved in the school throughout my sophomore to senior year and I truly believe that was the reason for my success and excitement throughout my academic and social life at LHS. Senior: My experience at Northampton High School has been a good one for sure. We have excellent teachers, especially in the history, science, and music departments. Everyone is very welcoming and accepting. It's about everything you want in a high school and has a wide spectrum of class offerings from AP to regular. Smith College is also close by and you can take some college classes there. My only complaint would probably be the grading policy which was implemented last year (2021) called standards-based grading. Parent: WOW, is all I can say about HCSS West! As a parent, we all want the best for our children but lets face it, it may not be achieved in a public school setting. For my child, it definitely wasn't and was looking for a new environment where he wasn't labeled any more. I did my research which showed both good & bad reviews. We went for a tour and talked to people. Since he was almost failing his core classes, he was miserable, and he fought every time he had to get ready for school, I figured what was the worst thing that could happen with the change? I just knew it was stressful and a miserable way to start every day. Day one, he came home and said he loved it which brought tears to my eyes. Never had we heard anything like that from his mouth! Never had we seen excitement to go to school! Never had we seen him make honor roll! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this to happen but I am so happy it did. Parent: If you are looking for a Challenging curriculum, dedicated and attentive teachers and staff, with some of the best Sport coaches in the area HCSS is the school for you. I have a son who graduated in 2020 and is now thriving in WNE mechanical engineering program and a current 8th grader in the honors program. Both of my boys want to go to school everyday, enjoy the challenging courses and play/ed three varsity sports. They have made great friends, gained mentors and are being prepared for college. In the very few times where we have had a curriculum or student behavior issue, it has been address quickly and to our satisfaction. I have found that when a student or parent brings issues to the teachers or administrators attention in a respectful manner with realistic expectations they meet or exceed what is necessary to address those issues in a timely manner. Senior: The environment at GMHS is perfect from your first day freshman year to your last day of senior year. Senior: It's great for academics even if it's hard. The teachers are great because they are very invested in your education and genuinely care about you; they're willing to accommodate your needs and talk to you at any hour if you need something. The food is okay. They mainly serve pizza and chicken patties. My only complaint is that the students are very stuck up and cliquey so that its difficult to make friends. The sports are pretty good but they always get underfunded since hockey takes the main priority, which makes sense because it's the only D1 team. Still kinda sucks. The administration is bad. They don't communicate with other parts of the school and are very strict so their lack of management rubs off on your daily activities. Speaking of daily activities, it's pretty fun at Pope because they always have something going on and try to give you an easy day/day-off every couple of weeks with either a retreat or remote day due to a teacher's meeting. Senior: The academics are ok at our school we have some ap and such just not crazy high level classes. The teachers are subpar some are very useful and helpful and can be really good friends to there students but on the other hand some teachers are just so disrespectful to students and do not teach very well at all. We have a ton of clubs and sports, they are always adding more clubs for people with different interest. I did not feel ready for college at all tho since we are not even doing things for college and it is my senior year. For example in English class instead of writing our college essays we are reading a book. Safety wise I do not think it is very safe since the ceilings have wholes in them and water drips through them and there has been more than a few students who have slipped and fell from the water on the floor.... Senior: I had a very good experience at Somers High School. When I went into my freshman year I was very nervous, but all of my teachers showed me there was nothing to be nervous about. As I went into my sophomore year I was feeling so much better about my surroundings, but then the pandemic hit. Online school for sophomore year and part of junior year was very stressful, but my teachers did all they could to help manage the stress. I play two sports for the school and both of those programs are excellent. All of the coaches were very welcoming and made me enjoy going to practice everyday. Our student body is very involved in going to support all of the teams and have lots of school spirit.
