Senior: Mass Academy is an amazing school! The collaborative environment and assignments that are geared toward challenge and real-world applications make being a student here an inspiring and enjoyable experience. The academics are top-notch and challenging, and everyone will help each other. With the small size of ~ 50 students per grade, you get to know each of the faculty members and your classmates personally. The faculty offer a lot of support with independent projects and the college application process. Senior year at WPI prepares you well for college. Although you are always busy as a junior, most of the projects are truly enjoyable because you get to work in a group, including when designing an app and assistive technology device. There are also great classes in the humanities and language, so students gain skills in math and science as well as writing, English, history, and Spanish/French. Parent: Our daughter graduated in 2022 from Cushing, transferring in after her Sophomore year at another solid prep school.She reclassed because she knew she would love Cushing and simply wanted to spend three years there, not just two. She drove the decision to transfer and did all the research, identifying two strong boarding schools. She wanted to board. Early on, we decided to focus on Cushing. In hindsight, it was the best decision we could have made. We found Cushing to be a very welcoming, caring community. Academics are rigorous as you want. Plenty of AP courses offered as well as advanced courses. Engineering was one of her favorite classes and helped her decide that a STEM career is what she wanted to pursue in college. Visual Arts programs offered are amazing. She enjoyed glass making, creating a few treasured gifts. She sang and did theater; Performing Arts also excellent. Athletics programs are strong. Parent: I want to add my support as the parent of two recent Bancroft graduates. As much as it was clear while my kids were still there that Bancroft was a great school (both in terms of academic strength and in terms of inspiring, caring teachers), I didn't really understand how great it was until they started college. Both of them went on to highly selective colleges (one of them with a $100K merit scholarship), and when they got to college, they just excelled. Something about the Bancroft approach to inquiry and curiosity, writing, public speaking, and self-advocacy was the perfect alchemy for college success. They were both much better prepared than their college classmates, and both ended up being a go-to resource for college friends who weren't as strong at thinking independently, writing, and participating in a college community. Senior: I have loved my high school years at the Winchendon school. The education was phenomenal and the opportunities I had are like no other school. I took part in different colabs which involved living as a homeless person, recycling wood from the forest into furniture pieces, up cycling clothes to trendy styles and traveling to Georgia to work in a non profit. I feel if I was in a public high school I wouldn’t have had these opportunities. It really changed my outlook and my passion. Alum: I loved the people, and the education itself was incredible. I was challenged and supported academically in order to better succeed in college. I loved the teachers, and their willingness to help you in any way they could really was apparent. As an alumni now, I am proud to say that I went to such a well rounded school, and their initiatives to promote diversity and empowerment really added to my takeaways, and experience as a whole. One thing that I did not love about Bromfield was that it was often strict and biased on expectations. For example, we had a dress code that was often only directed towards female students. Additionally, if you were a star student or athlete, you were often exempt from punishment or rules, or had a slap on the wrist, whereas for anyone else, the consequences would have been much greater. Junior: Attending Shrewsbury High School is not a unique experience, it's a means to an end. Like any other school, it has strengths and weaknesses. Some teachers are amazing, some classes are constantly engaging; some teachers probably should've considered a different profession, and some classes make it a struggle not to fall asleep. Our school is very academically focused and mainly directs attention towards gifted students rather than those who need help. The environment of the students can be very toxic due to the general pressure to pursue a stem related field. Pursuing the arts or humanities is generally not supported. The school mainly directs its money towards sports, leaving most other clubs poorly organized and less popular. The town of Shrewsbury is generally well off, which contributes to pressure of students to go to prestigious colleges and be successful monetary wise. Although I, like any High School student, am still quick to point out Nipmuc’s shortcomings, I am extremely lucky to have attended this school. Parent: Whitinsville Christian School is not just a school, it's a family. One of my girls has attended K-2 and the other just completed K. They feel loved by all the staff every day they walk in the building, which even includes staff at the front desk and teachers they haven't even had yet! As a parent, I feel like the staff care about me as well. Everyone is always so welcoming. We've built relationships and my children are excited to go back to school in August. They miss their friends and teachers. The other night, my youngest prayed that she could hug her teacher again. I contacted her teacher and she met up with us just so she could get that hug! WCS is not just a school, it's an extension of your family. The academic aspect of the school has put both my girls beyond many of their peers who attend other schools. Sophomore: I'm currently attending and honestly, it's a great school. Not entirely diverse, but there is a lot of diversity. The education is good, helps students who need help and accommodates students that are ahead of their grade level. There are plenty of clubs, multiple instrumental, choral, sports, creative, etc. Guidance and nurse are both amazing, they are willing to work with each student to help them get through the day well. The new staff this year are absolutely amazing- a huge step-up from last year. They genuinely care. The freedom that students get: eating outside for lunch, free periods, no uniform, is a perfect level, not too much, but enough to be comfortable. Also, the way they've handled COVID-19 is incredible. Webcams, headsets, in classrooms, optional online learning, masks, 6 feet apart signs, hand sanitizer, etc, they've done everything we could ask for. Every student has an opportunity to encounter the great works of history, from Euclid's beautifully logical proofs to Longfellow's masterful poetry. Senior: Blackstone Valley Tech offered me a fresh start with a phenomenal curriculum and teachers who made classes enjoyable. Attending a vocational school that is able to combine both experience and education has become something I am deeply grateful for. It's always a pleasure to listening to faculty and teachers as they are lively and teach to the fullest extent of their ability. I have been in situations where I felt as if I was falling behind in challenging courses and found myself receiving guidance from every teacher. Something I would like to see changed would be for the faculty to integrate ethnic cultures and backgrounds into the school environment. Parent: My three children have been attending SLA for five years now. The school feels like family! All the teachers know and engage with my children, even if they haven't had them in their class. Because it's a small school the students get lots of one-on-one instruction and all can participate in sports or music, not just the top 10%. My kids are participating in the honors program and are on track to attend competitive universities--I attribute much of that to the extra attention they get.
