Senior: Although small, the St. Mark's community is great as there are a myriad of ways to connect with others. One example is how the Seniors get little buddies (1st through 3rd graders) that they interact with throughout the year, and at the all School Christmas party, bring their little buddy in on their shoulders and let them put an ornament on the Christmas Tree. This is only one of the many ways that St. Mark's brings everyone in the community together. Even if some of the courses are hard, the teachers are great and willing to meet outside of class to help students out. Sophomore: From a highschooler's view, Hockaday is an amazing school that challenges its students in academics, as it is a college prep. school. If you cannot handle pressure and you do not know how to study, this school might not be the best choice for you. Even then, Hockaday has lots of resources devoted to de-stressing and mentally helping students. For example, there was a day last year were there were dogs brought to the school during our free period, and we could pet them and have fun with our friends. Hockaday is also very accepting to all identities and creates a safe space for people to express themselves through clubs, fine arts, and many more. They are very involved in celebrating diversity. The school encourages different interests, and they strive for students to be well-rounded. The students are also very driven. Parent: We have been at DIS for 2 years, starting in 1st grade after transferring from another international school. We love DIS! The facilities are amazing with classrooms built around an ultra-secure courtyard containing a soccer field and multiple playgrounds. There is a wealth of specialized teachers even at the younger ages (e.g. separate French, English, math, STEM, music, and gym teachers). We've been very happy with the level of academic rigor offered, and the engagement of our teachers. There is a counselor who regularly visits the classes and helps students navigate the drama of being a young kid. LUNCH IS INCLUDED IN TUITION, and it's both healthy and kid-friendly. The DIS community works hard to maintain a family-like atmosphere with on-campus events like playdates, carnivals, dances, etc. The after-school program is varied with classes in the arts, sciences, and athletics. Junior: My over all experience with Parish Episcopal School has been very positive. I was very nervous at first as a Hispanic student joining a school that is mostly dominated by white Americans, however, everyone was very welcoming and I felt a sense of belonging after warming up to the people there. Something that I would change which is slowly happening, is the addition of more diversity along the school grounds so new students in the future won’t feel what I felt my first couple of days. Parent: The longer we have been at Westwood the more we fall in love with it. My primary student gets greeted with hugs from her friends, then they run around the perimeter of the playground for the morning recess which is how they start their day. I love the flexible drop off times, as early as 7:15 with no extra charge and as late as 8:45 for the primary level. 8:30 is morning recess. This flexibility has been a blessing for my family. The education is amazing, she is learning so much. The holiday celebrations are exuberant. The in-school after school activities are high quality and convenient. Most importantly the children are visibly happy at all levels. The Shakespeare and theater programs are awesome. Successful feeder to other private schools, but we plan to stay all the way! Parent: As a parent whose child has graduated from TCA, and attended for many years, I feel qualified to comment on the school. I may be unique in that I have had children attend other private schools in the area for contrast. First off, the teachers are what makes TCA a great place. The teachers care about the student and it is very evident that they are being prepared for college and life as they progress through the grades. The administration is very responsive to parent concerns. During COVID, TCA remained committed to keeping their doors open and they did! Kudos for that! I wish they were stronger was a no tolerance policy on bullying. They allowed too much of it before taking action, especially for online stuff can get out of control especially amongst the girls. We met several really nice families along the way and of course avoided the Karen/Richards & gossips of which there are many. Senior: I have grown up attending Covenant and can confidently say I would not want to have attended anywhere else the past thirteen years. The thing I have loved most about Covenant is the intentional relationship made with teachers and administration. I have always felt supported and loved by my teachers, and I know that they want what’s best for me. Covenant teachers are intentional and eager to do all that they can to help students succeed.
