Junior: My overall school experience has been very positive! The teachers(with 1 or 2 exceptions) and academics have been outstanding so far, and it seems like I can do whatever I put my mind to here. There are plenty of options for clubs, and plenty of motivated students who participate in them. When I first entered the school, I thought a lot of the students would be aloof trust-fund kids. However, for the majority of students, that thankfully doesn't hold true. My only 2 complaints are: 1)the math curriculum, which for me is too repetitive and not challenging enough; and 2)the behavior of the administration(especially during covid), which can be paternalistic at times.... Parent: We have a rising Kindergartener, who finished his first year at Friends in Pre-K. As a parent, and an educational professional, I personally could not have designed a better experience for my son, especially during the COVID-related shut down. We initially chose Friends for our son because we wanted more for him; we wanted him to learn through experience, to develop thoughts of his own and more importantly to be part of a community that subscribed to similar values as ours. Our son’s first year was FANTASTIC! Notably, while everyone was scrambling to figure things out when the State shut down, our son was being educated and supported in a way that was developmentally appropriate, fun and responsive. The transition to virtual school was so seamless, that it seemed like it was planned for (it might have been). Parent: I am constantly recommending The Stony Brook School to my family and friends because it is such a wonderful place. My daughter has thrived and become a more confident learner. She enjoys going to school each and every day! The teachers challenge her while offering support any time she may need. The faculty, staff and coaches are top notch and really care for their students and want them to succeed. She has grown tremendously both as a writer and reader. Socially, she has made many sweet and caring friends at SBS. There is a strong sense of community among students, faculty, staff and parents. The Stony Brook School hosts numerous events both on and off campus. The schools motto of Character Before Career is truly evident and embraced by all. Senior: My experience at Grace Church School has been overall good. I believe that Grace has prepared me for the outside world and has given me opportunities of a lifetime. One thing the school needs to improve on is its diversity and antiracism practices. A student of color's school experience should not be deterred because of racist incidents at school. The school needs to support students of color more when these things occur. Outside of that experience, I'd say that I'd choose Grace again for the resources it has provided to help me be successful, the teachers and faculty always willing to help, the community building, and the number of opportunities.... Senior: My experience at Brooklyn Friends School has lasted from my first days stepping into 375 Pearl Street as a little 9-year-old to attending classes at Lawrence to my graduation. I obviously have a connection to the school as I have been here for 8 years. However, there have been ups and downs. The teachers all show great commitment to the community and the preservation and ubiquity of knowledge. They allow students to feel safe and heard. However, if you are planning on taking the IB Program, it is important to note that certain aspects of the program, you are not fully prepared for. I'd say this is fairly common in the STEM departments of the High School. I still have built amazing friendships and learned boundless information and gained a sense of self throughout my time here. The Quaker Values, although implemented in the learning and norms, are not overwhelming or all-consuming. Senior: There are many things I like about Hoosac. The things I liked the most are: small school, small class sizes, most faculty resides on campus which allows me to reach out almost anytime and not only during school hours. I also enjoy that the class schedule is set up like college. This allows me time to get some things done in the afternoon before practice and allows me plenty of time at night to study and hang out with friends. Even though hockey is my primary sport, I'm also able to participate in other sports and activities on campus. Some improvement suggestions would be broader class offerings, sports facilities on campus (this creates student involvement), better communication to parents and of course the food could always be better.... Senior: I'm a senior at Christian Central Academy and have attended since kindergarten, I love it! The teachers really care about the students and the culture of the school is one of growth and love. It is an academically rigorous school that promotes college readiness and AP classes of which I've taken many. There are small classes, rarely more than 20 students so everyone gets one one one time with the teachers and no one is overlooked. It has a safe and positive environment and I'm so grateful for my parents enrolling me here. Being a small school our sports teams have much fewer numbers but the student sections are filled with cheers and our high school girls varsity basketball team made state playoffs last year! Extracurriculars like music and clubs are promoted and everyone looks forward to (being in/watching) the high school play every year. Works Here: As a former student and current teacher my positive experience with Houghton Academy goes back more than fifty years. What I like about Houghton Academy is the dedication that the faculty, staff, and administration demonstrate to the academic, spiritual, and personal development of each student. The school’s small size and location in a small town contribute to each student feeling like a member of a close academic family. However, the school’s proximity to Houghton University means that the cultural and educational opportunities at Houghton Academy are far greater than would be expected given its small-town environment. In the future, I hope that Houghton Academy will continue to grow moderately, without sacrificing its family-like atmosphere. Parent: As a parent, choosing LCS was one of the best decisions we ever made with our two kids. They loved their time at LCS with our only regret not starting them there since kindergarten or Pre-K. There are so many positives that I will run out of space in this review. It is a school where the teachers and administration truly care about the students and their families. The academics are strong with an emphasis on challenging the students to think analytically and to truly learn a subject. The students have the opportunity to take college credit classes which has allowed both of our kids to start college academically as sophomores which is a big financial incentive! The Christian worldview teaching matches with our worldview which was a must for any private school for our family. The opportunity to be part of extracurricular activities like sports, clubs, music and drama all contribute to a well rounded student. Senior: I first got introduced to Tabernacle at the beginning of my eighth grade year of middle school. At first, it took a lot of getting used too because I came from a large public school, but I managed. I struggled a lot at first, but the teachers made sure I had everything I needed and were always very helpful and patient. Now that I'm a senior, the community at Tabernacle has become like my second family. I grew a strong bond with most of the teachers there and I developed wonderful friendships throughout the years. Parent: The decision to send our children to Mekeel was one of the best decisions we made as parents. From the moment they walked into the school they became family. Teachers here not only care for their students academics, but care for seeing them develop into strong young men and women who will do great things in their community and world. Both of our children were able to graduate with enough college credits to start as sophomores, thanks to the dual enrollment program.
