Parent: We are fortunate that the Columbia area has many wonderful schools to choose from, but do your homework and be sure to visit Heathwood Hall - it stands out among the rest! Lots of schools in Columbia have rigorous academics. But Heathwood has SO.MUCH.MORE. Junior: There is a genuine care for the wellbeing of students at our school, and it contributes to a great environment in which student-faculty relations are extremely positive. The beautiful campus creates a great vibe for students and when the weather is kind, the general mood of the campus feels enlightened. Every teacher tries their hardest to make sure that each student is fully able to reach competency in any subject. While there are so many positives, the workload can sometimes be inconsistent, and some weeks are incredibly stressful and difficult, yet others can be a walk in the park. Another slightly inconsistent facet of a Porter-Gaud education is the class selections; often times incredibly gifted students are placed in on-level classes with students that do not share similar academic ambitions, while others who are less deserving can be placed in Honors or AP classes.... Senior: I love Ben Lippen! I've attended the school for the last 13 years. To be honest, my favorite parts are the science department and the international program. The science teachers are fantastic at their jobs, and genuinely care about their students. The international program has exposed me to so many cultures that I would never get the chance to experience otherwise! The international students ask questions that I would never think of, and I learn so much from them about their countries and about my own in the contrast. However, the international program is also my least favorite part of the school. The domestic students find it difficult to convince the international students to participate in many domestic student events, so at the school, there ends up being two groups: the Americans and the boarding students. Senior: I switched from public middle school to private school for the 8th grade. I was only planning on staying at Mead Hall to finish out middle school but I loved it so much that I wanted to stay for high school. The small classroom size has allowed me to become really close with some of my teachers. The small grade size allows for closer friendships. Our college counselor has been amazing in preparing me for college next year. Over my four years in high school, she had come to me about better preparing me for college. The food is amazing. Our lunch ladies are the sweetest people and they know you by name. The food is homecooked meals that are absolutely delicious. Alum: I attended Southside Christian School, in Simpsonville, SC, from 6th grade all the way through high school graduation. I had a very good and close understanding and relationship with SCS to say the least. One of the first benefits of attending SCS was the academics. Academics at SCS are nearly unrivaled by any other school in the upstate. The teachers are outstanding and make for certain that every single student takes away the right information and understanding after each class. Speaking of teachers, the faculty and staff at SCS are amazing. They truly care for each and every student and do their best to make an enjoyable and memorable school experience. Extra-curricular activities are also a talking point of SCS. I was on the football team my entire time attending this school, and I cannot explain the vastness of benefits I received from applying myself to football while at SCS. The options to pursue fine arts and athletics are incredible. I have kids participating in both and the teachers make sure to help them have a healthy balance. High School Senior: I love PCAG. I've never been to another school so I can't compare, but overall I think Palmetto Christian is a great school. The teachers really care about the individual students and their personal opinions on topics in class. They also try to help the students in any way they can so they can reach their full academic potential. The academics at PCAG are challenging and push you to your limits. This is an attempt to push the students to do their best; however, the workload can be overbearing at times. Other than the intense academic workload, the school is a great place to have earn an education. Parent: Our son graduated from OCA in 2020. My husband and I can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was with OCA! We transferred our son to OCA when he was a freshman in high school. In his previous school, the teachers were unengaged and there was rampant bullying. The moment we walked into OCA we knew this school was different. Teachers are supportive of students, students were friendly and welcoming and everyone seems genuinely happy you're here. The teachers are here because they want to teach here. Parent: Our family came to WCCS in August 2022. For me, as an employee at the upper campus and our 3 children started first grade and third grade at lower campus. We could not be happier. Not only are the teachers and administrators wonderful, but my kids immediately felt right at home. We were accepted with open arms and have been loved on since the day we started!
