Parent: I have 2 children at St. Margaret's and I can't say enough good things about the school and the environment. They really do try to develop the whole child. It isn't just a factory trying to turn out 4.0 students with 1600 SAT scores! Yes it is competitive, but in a good way. Many of the students have been at the school since pre school! The facilities are amazing - better than 99% of the colleges out there. The teachers really care and for the most part, the parents are great. Yes, there are the occasional obnoxious parent, but they usually get chopped down to size cuz there is always someone wealthier and more successful than them :-) If you want your child to develop into a great adult with compassion and drive, then SMES is an excellent place to go.... Alum: Campbell Hall Episcopal is the greatest school in the world! I had the privilege to attend for all 13 years and would not have it any other way. What sets Campbell Hall apart is its traditions of close-knit community, caring faculty, where kids grow & make life-long friendships; its 4 R's, & students from loving, nurturing families. Where it could improve is in its lack of enough qualified teachers who aren't wannabe Hollywood stars, its need to embrace its roots, not change what works under social pressure, and build its social science program to balance the misguided focus on STEM, & need to commit to more K-12 families instead of allowing too many new families in 7-12th grade that often bring bad influences, and keep the "bubble" closed. Junior: The Cambridge School is a great school. There are not many kids, which leads to deep relationships between teachers and students. All of the teachers are amazing and extremely knowledgeable in their respective fields. They want you to do well in their subjects, and are constantly available at lunch and after school, but whats better is they truly care about the type of people their students are becoming, which leads to an incredible community and culture. Senior: Oaks Christian is an excellent school academically, particularly in the English and Math departments. It has a breadth of resources like the IDEA lab (contains woodworking, metalworking, and 3D-printing machinery) and an expansive variety of elective choices. The teachers are quite invested in each student, and there is generally respect given both ways. The student body is a little friendlier and "tamer" than I imagine the average high school; though, every school is different of course and I can only reference my own experiences. In terms of diversity, the school has international dorms and there's a large number of students from the East. However, the school attracts a number of wealthy families and seems to value that reputation more than is healthy. Tuition is high and has been increasing, though they offer a good deal of aid as well. Parent: We have two boys in 6th and 8th. They both love going to school and enjoy after-school activities. There are clubs like cross country, volleyball, and flag football if your child is into sports. The admin staff members and teachers are genuinely friendly and interested in getting to know the student and his/her family. Kids love gourmet food prepared by amazing chef Hugo. During the pandemic, the school prepared a week's worth of lunches on Monday. Which was supposed to last for five days. Junior: Absolutely amazing! Some may be concerned with the size of the student body, but not to worry! Class sizes are small enough that you get to have a very personal and supportive relationship with your teachers, as well as all the other students in your class. Socially, there are enough students to be acquaintances with all of them, but still have close friends. The education is amazing too! There is a path for every type of student. Parent: An excellent Christian private school. For a small school, it offers an amazing diversity of challenging academics/APs for college prep but also student support. The motto is that students come first, and every student is known and loved. The administration aims to support struggling students, & that academic and mental health support been especially important at this time. At the very start of the pandemic, while other schools were scrambling to transition to virtual learning or independent study projects, PacBay seamlessly moved learning online over the course of a weekend. The administration did a great job researching and planning. Students attended classes on campus one day, and smoothly transitioned online the next week to minimize learning loss. As restrictions loosened, and vaccinations rose, the school's done a wonderful job re-opening the campus safely. Alum: I went to Trinity Classical Academy from kindergarten through 12th grade and I loved the experience! I was able to watch and grow with the school and my friends as it progressed over time. Teachers and faculty are very active in making sure that the differing programs advance to a classical standard which is best for the student body and families. I was involved in groups such as theater, orchestra, cross country, soccer, softball, and more over my years there. Parent: So far, I'm impressed with the "out of the box" education style at Village. They take a creative approach to teaching the fundamentals using art, auditory, visual, and tactile modes of presenting material to make it more interesting. The academics are challenging but they strive for a "whole child" approach so that the kids still have time & energy left for extracurriculars and family. The school is very spiritual and focuses on living out your faith. I believe they are doing a good job at teaching the Bible and Christ's love while not driving kids away from faith as some overly dogmatic religious institutions do. There are many wonderful opportunities for the kids to explore from excellent sports to a stellar fine arts department. The theatre department is regarded as one of the best and produces Broadway caliber shows year after year. We transferred to Ambassador where she developed meaningful relationships, had access to teachers who also wanted the kids to learn and critically think (not just memorize and regurgitate information). In a world where sats/acts seem to be disappearing, my child can differentiate herself through dual enrollment/early college. The Harkness method helps my child use critical thinking and communication skills as part of her learning experience. Senior: Had a wonderful time here. Teachers were excellent, I could only have passed my classes with them, but they were also incredibly friendly and I truly built incredible connections with them. Staff here are all fantastic, absolutely no complaints there. Sometimes kids are rowdy, or mean, or whatever adjective preppy private school kids could have. But I really believe the staff did the best they could in keeping things orderly and controlling those kids while never overstepping or making students feel ruled. Sports are incredible, school spirit is incredible, extracurricular leaders are very dedicated to working around students and encouraging them, you will never have to choose one or the other. Parent: A friend of ours referred us to this wonderful school as we were struggling with the learn-from-home (aka staring at a screen all day) model given by our public charter school. OVCA has been open since August with no outbreaks (a few cases from parents of students in different grades but no inter-transmission of COVID while in school, as far as I know). My friend had been sending her kids to this school for many years and said it was the best parenting choice she had made, and I can't help but agree with her. My child is happy and thriving in a supportive environment, with appropriate learning goals and surrounded by friends who share the values of kindness, respect, and diligence. It's a sacrifice/priority financially but well worth the value and a bargain compared to the cost of other private schools in the San Diego area. I can't recommend this school highly enough!...
