Alum: At Groton, I feel that I have been able to become a more independent and conscientious person during my time at this school. The best thing about this school is the resources that it provides the students. Here, I feel that I can be whoever I like because the teachers, dorm parents, coaches, and community is supportive of everyone's quirks, interests, and dreams. The teachers are approachable and dedicated, and work hard to provide students with a positive experience and I have made some of the truest and most diverse background friends. However, while at my time here, I have noticed that there is a toxically competitive culture here. Moreover, sometimes it is hard to get leadership positions in clubs because one has to be "connected" or popular, and the unsafe hook-up culture NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED! Senior: Although small, the St. Mark's community is great as there are a myriad of ways to connect with others. One example is how the Seniors get little buddies (1st through 3rd graders) that they interact with throughout the year, and at the all School Christmas party, bring their little buddy in on their shoulders and let them put an ornament on the Christmas Tree. This is only one of the many ways that St. Mark's brings everyone in the community together. Even if some of the courses are hard, the teachers are great and willing to meet outside of class to help students out. Senior: Lots of opportunities to do things and the worst part was when there was the opportunity, but I could figure out how to get to it. Generally good with Financial Aid with some exceptions like having to be in a music program in order to get music lessons, but largley only being able to be in a program if you already played something. The athletic options were good, both on teams and otherwise. The art department was fantastic and many students were close with the teachers. Though other kids' experiences varied, I liked all my teachers. We learned a lot and had easy accessibility to things outside of the classroom, including trips, (moderately) job opportunities, hearing from speakers and alumni, community service, general get-to-gethers/events, and more.... Parent: If you want a well-rounded high school experience, St. Paul's is the place to go. It is clear that the school genuinely cares about its students, faculty, and staff. They've done a lot of research on diversity programs and, consequently, have done a great job of building a friendly and inclusive environment. Freshman: Having relocated last year to San Diego from out of state, we were delighted to find a school that was aligned with our desires for our daughter's education as well as our family's values - The Bishop's School fit the bill! Our then 8th grade daughter was welcomed into the community and really enjoyed her new school. Now in her 2nd year, she was very excited for school to start. The community is racially diverse, quite socio-economically diverse and although parochial, students and faculty of all faiths/no faith are represented and respected. Academically, our daughter found the curriculum to be at pace with her previous school but did have some difficulty adapting to her enriched mathematics class due to the "Harkness-Exeter" teaching method. In hindsight, we wish we would have researched this method better so our daughter would have been better prepared but ultimately, she transferred to a math class that employs a more traditional approach to teaching and is now succeeding.... Parent: My older daughter is in eleventh grade at St. Andrew's and we are now applying for our younger daughter. When we first looked at St. Andrew's, I spoke with a mother of three former students (including one who started somewhere else, realized she made a mistake and transferred to St. Andrew's). One of the things this mother told me was that St. Andrew's gave her daughters four more years of childhood, which was impossible at home. Another parent commented that St. Andrew's isn't a "sharp elbow" school, but rather a school were the students are smart and hard-working AND highly supportive of each other. There are plenty of schools with excellent facilities, quality academics, and wonderful extracurricular activities, but we were struck by the very intentional culture of authenticity, presence, connection and kindness at St. Andrew's. Junior: Berkeley Prep has been an overall incredible experience for me and has given me so many opportunities I would never have been exposed to otherwise. The resources are unparalleled, whether you are interested in STEM or history, with an incredible robotics team and a nationally ranked debate program. One of the most unique things about Berkeley is the community. Everyone is always doing something interesting, and I think a lot of my best learning has come from outside the classroom and through hearing about what my peers are working on. Alum: My exchange year experience in St. Timothy’s school was excellent. I’m from Spain and I spent my sophomore year as a boarder. I had never spent a year away from home and I was terrified at first but after only a month this school felt like a new home to me and I made friends that are like family. The girls were very welcoming and I made friends from all over the world. Right now after two years I still keep in touch with them, I’ve recently come to Maryland to visit my best friend from school. One of the best things about St. Tim’s are the teachers, I could always count on them for an extra explanation which made adapting to the IB program easy. After some time I even switched to harder classes! St. Tim’s allowed me to grow as a person, I went from being very shy to being confident and independent.
