Senior: A very good school in not the best part of town. Students and staff are willing to help, although some teachers can be a bit rude. There isn't much encouragement when it comes to academics. People claim to be busy busy and that's why everyone is okay with the massive procrastination and culture of laziness going on. The poor TAs! The emphasis is definitely on extracurriculars, of which there aren't actually that many. If you've heard about how you can get an Associate's degree here, it's true. Our student-teacher ratio is so high because our many professors aren't accounted for in that metric. Still, classes of 30+ students are normal. Senior: My overall experience with Aspire Benjamin Holt College Preparatory Academy has constantly shifted and spiraled throughout the years. As a young freshman seeking to experience the epic high and lows of high school, I was disappointed when I learned my school didn't even have a football team. I quickly came to the realization that this would not be the typical high school experience and spent most of my freshman year with a poor attitude towards my school. My school instead focuses on implementing college classes into our school rather than sports and clubs. Eventually, I came to appreciate my school because of all the college credits I now have. As a senior I realize this school has set me up in the best way possible, and there is no other school that goes so far to actually build college classes into students schedule, and take away the stress of having to take these extra classes on your own. Parent: I love the college readiness that JMC promotes and the project based learning environment. My son transferred to JMC in 2nd grade and will soon promote to 6th. Class sizes are small, teachers are extremely communicative, and he has access to a plethera of materials for a hands on learning experience. My child retains what he is taught with ease, loves talking about his experiences and shows daily that his school is a safe space for him to grow and learn. JMC is also very family oriented and the staff responds quickly and is easy to work with. Junior: While hating on one's school, being negative or picky, or having irritation with schools is oddly a popular trend amongst students, one does not have the chance to jump on the hate bandwagon if they go to Millennium. Millennium Charter School offers amazing classes, taught by phenomenal teachers such as Harvard, Stanford, and USC alums, and resources that former MHS students preach made them extremely college ready, especially compared to their undergraduate peers. While school culture can be improved when it comes to rallies, spirit, and more, that problem sort of lies on default teen embarrassment of being excited about something. Millennium's environment is extremely welcoming and helpful, and administration and staff ensures all students are protected, doing their best, and have the most beneficial material available to them. Alum: I graduated here with IB diploma. Overall it's a great school in terms of academics. IB courses are difficult but it definitely prepares you for college (and if you score well enough on IB exams, you can skip some college classes). Admission to here is difficult, it took me for about 8 months to be enrolled from waitlist. Teachers are generally nice and are willing to help students. But some does not respect boundaries and are notoriously disrespectful (if you studied TOK in DP), you know who I am talking about. Other than that, the food is terrible, there are no meat and the food taste pretty bad. Also, the worst thing is the LOCATION. PE is very fun but there are no designated region to play sports. So we either played inside the St. Mary's Church, or outdoor parks like Fremont. Senior: Pacific Law Academy, often known as PLA, is a college preparatory high-school. To be a full-time student, you must be a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, but seventh and eighth graders at the nearby school (Kohls) has the chance to come to PLA for a period to partake in Algebra 1 and get ahead. The school is small of about 200 or so students, so everyone almost knows one another. As a result of this small school, teachers interact more with students and provide more academic support. However, unlike most high schools, we do not follow the "block" schedule. Instead, we have seven classes year-round (one of them being advisory). So this can be quite demanding, but also helpful in a way that you don't have to spend an hour and more in one course. Senior: Venture Academy is a charter school in Stockton California with teachers that are very helpful and friendly, you're able to create a good bonds with teachers! Venture Academy offers CTEC classes that favor the students interested in mechanics. It offers Art Essentials and Photoshop that interest the artistic students. Provides health type classes such as Health. Something Venture Academy should consider expanding on should be health-related classes. All these different opportunities while still containing the essential classes to pass high school and attend colleges. Venture Academy design is a bit basic and small, fortunately it is maintaining very well in terms of design. What I especially loved about Venture Acadamey is the fact that you get homeschool on Friday. This allows for assignments to be completed all in one day, or at least that is how I see Friday homeschool. A way to complete assignments and extra study if needed. Alum: They will prepare you for College when it comes to attire and curriculum. Everyone who attends will be able to get accepted into Colleges that the student applies for. Of course, it depends on how much work you have put in. The staff is amazing, they’ll entertain you during passing periods. The rules that are implemented will seem unnecessary at times, but if you look at what those rules represent, then you’ll understand why the rules were implemented the way they were. Middle School Student: I go to Joe Serna currently and I'd say it's a really good school, it has it's problems and some teachers could do a better job, I'd say it's perfectly alright. We moved to another school campus called Houston. The school campus it's self is pretty nice, we did get put in smaller classrooms but the size of the school itself kind of makes up for that. The Houston kids are alright, there staff are pretty lax when it comes to the kid's safety. The after school program staff are also really nice (well, for the most part anyway). They can kind of get on your nerves sometimes but overall there pretty cool teachers. The students here are mostly well behaved and there aren't really any delinquents. Junior: Honestly, way better than my experience at Stockton Collegiate International Schools. I been at One. Charter Academy of Visual and Performing Arts for the last months of my junior year, and continuing this summer, and the remainder of my sernior year. I never felt more connected with teachers, more welcomed with open arms. Stockton Collegiate was all work, no fun. The teachers I would communicate with but showed no time for me or many of the students. Not even for work when we had questions outside of class. At One. Charter, I have been able to get work done, teachers to connect with me on a level I am sure other high school teachers say they want to connect with students, but possible do or don't mean. Socially, the students are more open minded to new things at One.Charter, than at Stockton Collegiate. even before I attended and was visiting, I was welcomed with open arms.
