Senior: BASIS San Antonio Shavano Campus has academic rigor like no other. The emphasis on STEM subjects genuinely helps students to prepare for their futures, and with the help of the college counselors, their higher education. In addition, BASIS provides some degree of flexibility in scheduling, allowing each student to customize their own path and achieve their own greatness. However, no school is perfect, and aide from the expected antipathy of the students towards the immense workload, BASIS sports are less than ideal, even in the scope of the Charter League, and so are the arts, moreso fine than liberal. Senior: The learning environment was very rigorous but it helped prepare me for college. They teach you advanced learning techniques and have an open and welcoming environment with equality for everyone through the use of school uniforms. It is a safer environment than any of the public schools I went to before going here. I've been going here for 10 years and have made a lot of friends. They are also very good and supportive of students with learning disabilities like ADHD and Dyslexia and Disgraphia, as well as students with depression and anxiety. Parent: This school is a great fit for my kids but it’s not for everyone. In our experience the academic aspect is very strong. I like that the teachers don’t just teach to the staar like surrounding districts. However, it appears most teachers are still covering the staar material as 2 of my kids received perfect scores on the math and reading staar several times. The sports and extracurricular activities are limited compared to surrounding districts but most people who choose this school are aware of this and don’t expect the same. We actually prefer the low-key aspect of the sports since it allows kids the opportunity to be on their school team in sports they might not have a lot of prior experience in. Most the teachers and administrators have been very responsive when I have a concern. It seems some people who have issues don’t really research what the IB curriculum is actually like or what sports and extracurricular programs are offered before choosing to send kids here. Senior: Imagine International Academy of North Texas has been a pivotal part of my academic journey as a senior student. This school excels in cultivating a global perspective, promoting tolerance, and embracing diversity. The faculty's dedication and passion for their subjects have consistently pushed me to achieve my best, and the small class sizes allow for personalized guidance. The school, however, is not without fault. The number of extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports is lacking, especially compared to other schools. Junior: ISchool High at University Park is a self-paced college readiness school. The high school classes you take are done through online lessons. The teacher is mainly there for questions, and so they can make sure you learned the content. After your freshman year, the amount of high school level classes you take is minimal. Because you can graduate high school with an associate degree here, you start taking a majority of dual credit classes. What I really enjoy about this school is that the dual credit classes you take are on the Lone Star University Park Classes. So, you take your college classes with actual professors and college students. The actual high school though, I enjoyed very much. Since it’s a smaller school, everybody knows each other, and there’s a minimal amount of conflict. It’s a very nice and friendly environment. Parent: My son has only been there for 1 semester and is thriving. He was homeschooled and some alternative schools he tried were not a fit. Chaparral has been supportive of the transition. I was quite skeptical re: the ability of a public school to accommodate an accelerated learner like he is, but since our first visit the school counselor was understanding of the situation and eventually worked out an adequate course placement. The teachers care for the kids, and some of them are outright hilarious, while classes and topics are highly engaging. Homework is rigorous, but not dull and / or to the test, as some reviews said… actually always quite interesting. The student body is quite diverse and I’m shocked some talked about racism. Is everything perfect? No school is! But when issues arise they are resolved promptly, and I appreciate this more than the apparent perfection other schools claim. Senior: Being at FCA as a Venezuelan student has been such a great experience! I thought that everything would be very complicated as there is a significant language barrier between English and Spanish. Freshman: This school has such a loving and safe environment. Teachers challenge students without overdressing students with busy work and meaningless tests. Students are kind to one another and teachers form a strong relationship with their students. Students are taught to think creatively and Innovatively through project based learning. Language Arts and Social Studies are taught hand in hand. While in history you learn about the Reform movement of the 1800s, in Language Arts you learn about Transcendentalism and get to voice your opinions on modern day issues. Class debates are encouraged and every students is respected and gets to voice their opinions in a safe environment. This was a great school and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Junior: As a junior at this campus, I would say that Westchester Academy for International Studies is unlike any high school in my district. Being the only high school offering the IB Programme in SBISD, the courses available are unique to this high school, with courses that challenge the student body, through classes such as IB English, IB History of the Americas, IB Biology, IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations, and IB Spanish. Through the various courses available, students are able to explore each subject through a different lens, encouraging them to collaborate in teams for group projects, such as the IB Science Group 4 Project, and collaborate with teachers and staff for individual projects, including the IB Diploma Programme EE (Extended Essay) and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) Project. Senior: Hi, my name is Kenechi and I am a senior at HSI Katy. I have attended this school for most of my high school years and had an eerie and somewhat fun time at Harmony. At HSI, the staff and administration can be more personal and help you towards your goals. Compared to a public school, harmony student ratio is much smaller. Teachers can set a deeper connection to their students, For example, Talking to college counselors about your applications and the task of sending transcripts is much easier with not too many students. My best experience with harmony was when we had outside days for dear. Dear would be like a quick class in the middle of first lunch and we would play soccer like it was recess. Middle school student: I’m Peyton a past student at trivium. I absolutely loved trivium it has been my favorite school. I love all of my teachers especially my band teacher, he was funny. I loved how much freedom we had, like 0 hour that was really fun and that was a good idea.I liked how small it was but it still felt big. There wasn’t that much drama like you would have in a normal school. And the sports….. the sports in my opinion were awesome. In volleyball we were first seat in our district without losing a single game, and then we made it All the way to the semifinals. Track was amazingly too I loved my coaches and how hard they pushed us. At trivium it was really easy to make all A’s. The only reason we left it because trivium isn’t necessarily behind in academic’s it was that it didn’t really push you like a college prep school would. But I agree no homework Is amazing. Sophomore: Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute is a really good school. From academics to the school community the school is a place I truly consider home. I have better options for academics than I have anywhere else. GPCI allows for students like me to be set for a great future. The best part is that by the time we graduate senior year, we have many college credits from the courses offered and taken at our school. GPCI only offers rigorous courses, so those who aren't up for the challenge will really have a hard time graduating with the requirements. GPCI is a small school but, what I learned from all my years there is that the size of the school allows for more one-on-one interaction with teachers and students. It allows for such a close and tight community whereas in any other high school, not everyone knows everyone. The environment is nice and the school is not very crowded. Its a great school for wanting to be better in your academics its also a great so for sports, although we don't have the required facilities as a regular public school, our school strives to make the best out of training and having to share a field with all the other sports and athletes we still manage to get great training in, in order to be successful in the sport. Middle school student: The school is pretty good, with the curriculum for honors students being challenging in a good way. It helped me learn more and become confident about moving up to the next grade. The best parts of my experience were from my Science and English classes, as the teachers had a good sense of humor and taught the topics while letting us write notes, which helped with our comprehension of said topic. There aren't necessarily any bad parts of my experience, as I've had teachers who've understood the students and managed to form friendly relationships with said students. Overall, the experience is worth it for it being a charter school. A thing I would like to see change is letting the school and its students/teachers/parents have a PTA, run bake sales, or have fundraisers more often or closer to the beginning of winter break so that money can be raised earlier for more field trips to places other than parks or stadiums....
