Parent: All three of my children, with extremely different personalities and needs, have attended the school since they were in kindergarten and all three of them loved it. What makes the charter school so successful is that every family chooses to send their child there. Inclusion, kindness, and other virtues are represented in the values of the students, teachers, staff and the parents. Kids are awarded for demonstrating these virtues. It is amazing when everyone feels safe and accepted, that barriers to learning are easily removed. Kids don't feel embarrassed to present their ideas, answer questions in class, or ask for help. Teachers can ask one student to help another with no objection. It's easier to form groups for projects. Parents feel the same confidence reaching out to the Parent community for help too. Senior: PVCICS has a great education program. Being such a small school all the teachers are able to get to know each student, giving them 1 on 1 attention, and being able to stop and answer any questions as needed in class. Students have a very close community along with each other and teachers throughout the building and multiple grades. The work load is a lot and can be very stressful. However the opportunity to learn Chinese is very cool and they have a great program, especially if you start in Kindergarten, to help students pick up the language quick. As far as offerings outside of academics, there are many different clubs available to high schoolers. The sports program is slowly growing and we have many amazing teams that are doing very well and increasing in strength every year. The school does put on some fun events throughout the year, such as movie nights, prom, etc., but those are also limited. Senior: Mystic Valley is an amazing school that offers challenging academics while also providing a plethora of resources when you need extra support. The smaller classes really allows for students to meet with teachers one-on one when struggling, and Ms. Wei in the college counseling department helps us with anything from time management to major/minor decision help. The opportunities Mystic Valley offers are as expansive inside the classroom as they are out! Senior: This school offered a lot of support during the pandemic. Students were able to speak about their feelings and their opinions were valued. This school made being on zoom very interesting and educational. This school has raised me well and disciplined me with understanding on why having great behavior is beneficial to you and others. It is very diverse and has a lot of students coming from Haitian decent. There are lots of African-American teachers, the students feel comfortable seeing the amount of representation. This school is competitive in sports and encourage kids to participate in gym. Students do lots of hands on projects and work outside, and gardening. Senior: What I like about the school is that it has a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for college. The academics are more advanced than what you would get at most schools, so students are challenged more. The teachers are also very nice and do a good job teaching the material, and are easy to reach out to if you need help. The school is also very diverse with many students coming from different nationalities. A few things I'd like to see change are I'd like to see more clubs for students to join since I feel there are not as many extracurriculars as there should be, and I hope the food quality improves since I am not a very big fan of it. Alum: The diversity was probably one of my favorite aspects of SSCPS. I had gone there K-12 so that is all I had known. I think it is a big part of what shaped me to be who I am today. I made great connections with peers who are some of the best people I've met. I never thought it was weird to call a teacher by their first name until I made friends with people who went to different schools. I think that was what helped form the connections I was able to make with teachers, which was a huge plus. I participated in a lot of activities and extra curriculars and I loved everything about them. I honestly feel like I have nothing bad to say besides I wish there was more space. Alum: Atlantis Charter is a small school and not a lot of people know it exists. For me, I’ve always wanted to go to a big school where there were lots of people and high level sports teams, and to be honest I did not like Atlantis Charter at first. But the reason that I rated Atlantis Charter 5 stars is because during my time there I came to realize that Atlantis has something to offer that nobody else did, family and community. Senior: This school has a strong academic curriculum and college and career readiness programs to help students be in the best shape that they can be for life after high school. They have an amazing support system through teachers, college and career counselors, and mentors. However, one of a few things that they're flawed in is staying consistent and being fair in some of their rule making. For example, they have a "ELH" rule that adds extended learning for students who miss any amount of class. However, they are not lenient towards doctor's appointments that can't be missed/rescheduled or any extremely personal circumstances. Junior: Neighborhood House Charter School, also known as NHCS, is a very great school in the Fields Corner area of Boston. The teachers are kind, helpful and very friendly towards the students. Students are kind and friendly to eachother, which created a welcoming environment. Although it is a very small school, everyone has a big heart for one another. There are strict dress codes but not too strict as you may think, you are able to wear shoes of your choosing everyday and you are able to carry around your phone freely. NHCS is teaching students to be responsible and to be grown. They go hard on your academics but it is definitely worth it.
