Parent: I have friends who are attending various private and public schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area from grades 5 on through 12. In sitting down with the other dads it is undoubtedly true that no school has done more to prepare post the outbreak of the pandemic then St Mark’s. Not only their children but their administration and teachers are out of this world! Not only did the school literally review replace hundreds of things across the campus, they’ve also implemented a fantastic screening program, testing program, and communications program for SARS-COVID19. I know that when selecting schools grades, scores and college admissions are the number one priority. I never thought I would pick a school based upon their ability to handle a medical global outbreak. The school has literally blown us away! Alum: It's hard to describe Regis in a short review, but since my graduation yesterday, I want to say a few words. If the sole reason of sending your child to Regis is so he can go to a high ranked college, look elsewhere. Like all places, Regis has negatives, but I can say with confidence that I don't regret attending. Sometimes the administration annoyed me, notably when trying too hard to be "politically correct", but it's not a huge complaint. Stories about academic difficulty hold true, but this reputation is not as extreme as often seen. Most classes require significant effort, and a few are very demanding, but a good amount are smooth sailing. The quality of teaching is fantastic. Some of the teachers I've learned from were some of the greatest people I've known. Socially, there's a place for everyone in this welcoming community, no matter your background. Alum: This school has had massive influence on my mind and spirit since matriculating in the JFK era. Can't really speak for current performance of school leadership and its culture, but lived it during an especially troubled and troubling time. Sorry to say it, though the obsession with Harvard, etc. detracted from the healthy experience that we needed so badly, but which was not available to many, despite the boosters who would cling to the idea that they had not been damaged nor damaged others. Bullying was the norm in our time, and one learned how to "blend in" so as not to receive the horrific public shaming that "gay" or otherwise non-standard boys would get. Not the best preparation for an accepting or humanistic mind set for life, one asserts. "IQ" learning may have been at the highest level than any school in the country if not the world, in one's time there. Junior: St. Albans has taught me time management skills because we are required to play a sport every season and practices end around 6. It truly is a strenuous environment academically but the friends you make in your years here make it all worthwhile. Knowing you aren’t the only person struggling or going through rigorous tests and papers makes it all more bearable. Other traditions like the BEEF Club, family style lunches, and chapels in the little sanctuary bring everyone closer together and really make you feel at home. Parent: My son was accepted at all the top schools in the city, and he chose Browning hands down. A large part of his rationality is how rigorous the curriculum is, but the biggest influence is how much fun he had during his tour. My wife and I are happy with his choice, particularly after we spoke with current parents and after we attended the Speaker Series. We love how small school is with only 35 boys per grade! The after school programs are excellent. Our son is working towards becoming an Eagle Scout outside of school and he finds enough time to fit it all in. Browning is excellent in fostering independence and self-advocacy. In addition, developing their diversity and inclusion practices have been an impressive endeavor particularly after over 100 years of tradition. Senior: Over the course of my 7 years at Gilman, I have fallen in love with the community I became apart of. Like any school, Gilman certainly has its flaws, but I would say the pros outnumber the cons 100 to 1. The teachers in both the middle and upper school are extremely passionate, hardworking, and caring people. The course load is certainly heavy at times, but if you manage your time properly and make sure to seek help from teachers, it is easy to be successful. Regarding social life, there is a group for everyone. Over time, you'll not only find yourself surrounded by a loyal group of immediate friends, but you can have a relationship with nearly everyone in the grade. In my personal opinion being on a sports team, club, or class is just like having a separate friend group. Alum: I went to Brunswick for 7.5 years. I didn't realize until long after graduation how many important lessons were passed on to the students about life, society, and how the world works. I left mid-year of my own volition and the school was very supportive. I transferred to a boarding school that specialized in winter sports because I was moving onto the international circuit. Brunswick, due to it's location, couldn't accommodate my needs. When I was there the school had lots of good teachers but struggled to recruit new highly talented teachers outside of its own alumni. Athletes were doted on and while the academics were high caliber, they are not comparable to Andover, Exeter, etc. Philips has been head of school for far too long. Parent: Our son went to a great public high school for freshman and sophomore year and is an honor student. He always wanted to go to prep school and he is an avid hockey and lacrosse player. He is now in his first year at Salisbury and is repeating his sophomore year. He cannot be happier with his decision and obviously that makes us as parents extremely happy. Coincidentally, we could not have picked a better time due to Covid. He is actually going to classes and having a real high school experience as opposed to if he had still been home at his former High School being subject to almost 100% online classes and no competitive sports.
