I have nothing but genuine love for Spiffy High! I enjoyed my time while I was student, but it was only after I went to college that I came to appreciate just how special of place it really was. The academics (AP classes & Honors) made my transition to college a breeze: SPFHS teachers actually teach you how to critically think, manage time and move through the real-world. Many of my HS classes were more rigorous than college - I got a STELLAR education at SPFHS and remember many teachers fondly. It was also a lovely place to be - so many clubs, interests, kind people. There wasn't this overwhelming sense of competition like at other "better" schools -- there was level of support and push to find and do what makes you happy. As we watch people struggle with common sense these days, I doubt any of my fellow 09 classmates are believing crazy conspiracies or struggling to understand racial injustices. We were all taught kindness, common sense, respect and character.
I've loved all my years at SPFHS. Between the teachers, sports, clubs, and other activities, there is bound to be a class or space where you feel like you truly belong. Academic wise I've learned so much and can proudly say the teachers are amazing. Some things I would try to work on including an orchestra for people who play string instruments (I play the violin) and maybe include or start up a club that's cooking-related. I also feel like we need some type of course or club to prepare for college, especially for first-timers or oldest children. Other than that it's a pleasure to attend Scotch Plains Fanwood HS!
SPFHS has provided me with many opportunities to find academic and extracurricular interests. They are always actively trying to improve the school, as well as listening to the students. The one controversial decision they have made recently is limiting students to only using the restrooms for 5 minutes at a time. While it is targeted toward students who vape, it negatively affects the whole student body who does not participate in those activities. Overall though, it is a great public highschool.
