Science, Language & Arts International School was founded on a deep-seated belief in the limitless capabilities of children. Our hands-on, project-based approach is informed by brain development research and promotes collaborative learning and critical thinking.
At SLA, students’ innate curiosity and creativity is nurtured and celebrated through exploration, observation, and experimentation. Our integrated curriculum and language-immersive environment provides a context for learning that deepens students’ understanding and broadens their perspectives.
SLA values inclusivity and strives to be a school that reflects the racial and socioeconomic diversity of our local community.
SLA is an anti-bias school. We admit students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin, gender identity, or creed to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.
Oral Fluency Practice
SLA's Oral Fluency Practice program is designed for children with limited exposure to the target language at home. These fun and informative games, stories, and conversations are tailored at a child’s level and designed to maximize spoken production. Join us this fall for options in French, Mandarin, Spanish, Korean or Italian! Sessions are designed for all levels of language learners.
Science, Language & Arts International School Reviews
It is a place where every teacher not only knows every student, but also recognizes when something is amiss or limiting a student’s academic or emotional development. Standards are high at SLA and the curriculum is rigorous, but students are met where they are. Arts education, math, and science are strong here.
The parent community at SLA is diverse (economically, racially, and professionally), which means it reflects Brooklyn in all its splendor: engaged, interesting, tough, loving, and driven. Wonderful people who support the school with elbow grease, time, and energy.
SLA does need a gym/auditorium, but luckily it’s near great playgrounds and FG park.
SLA parents like to say "we came for the French, but we stayed for the math"... and that's true in our case, but we've also stayed for *all* of the excellent teachers, the small class sizes, the incredibly rich art, and the close-knit community of families.
We're grateful for an emphasis on the life sciences, as our kids have developed a deep love for animals and a special interest in insects. They are now fluent in French, even as we are not French-language-speakers at home. My daughter entered in 1st grade and they were able to catch her up on the French through her years. She's now ready to enter a dual-language middle-school, with confidence in her French reading, writing and speaking skills.
In short, we absolutely love SLA.
