The academics are wonderful; teachers truly care about their students and will do their best to help them. I went through a really hard time during most of highschool, and I always felt supported by my teachers. At Sami, we have mentor groups, which is essentially a full day of home room every week, with the same group of students for all four years, including the addition of incoming freshman. Mentor group provides a support and community that is incredibly valuable to me. I do wish there were more art classes, but there is plenty of opportunity to take classes at Sota, the sister school, so it’s not entirely barren of opportunities. The science classes are varied in subject, the AP classes have an excellent teaching style and support, and the electives, after school clubs, and A&A’s are wonderful. The administration can sometimes be lacking, but the teachers themselves make up for it. Sometimes there are technical issues as there is poor service, seeing as it’s located in the park.
I believe that SAMi is the best school for finding yourself. It rests on the northern bend of Tacoma and exists through its partnership with Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and Metro Parks where we can use their resources for education. The SAMi culture is all about exploring and executing your vision with common-minded people resulting in a system, activities, clubs, and classes ran by students. It is amazing in fostering your individuality, however, the community in SAMi has grown stale as students decrease participation because of COVID. In these moments I wish the SAMi staff and administration took our broken community into their hands and used their authority to prompt a welcoming feeling rather than leaving it to the upperclassmen to teach human connections to younger students who have come into the school using online platforms. The science the school offers is a vast field, but I would like to see the same growth in the student community as like-minded scientists.
SAMI provided a very unique experience to schooling that I had not seen at my previous schools. Though the school was a bit more exclusive than other schools were, it provided a very close and focused community and learning environment because of that. Having had been undiagnosed with learning disorders, I always assumed myself a lost cause in schooling, but the teachers and environment at SAMI helped me gain confidence and understanding in my learning process. I would reccomend SAMI or either of its sistering schools to anyone feeling divergent from society’s expectations.
