I appreciated my opportunity to specifically study the arts while I was there. I was in the creative writing department, which had staff turnover while I was there that made it significantly more difficult. Too much funding was spent on the performing arts while the performing arts got left in the dust pretty frequently. We weren't even allowed poetry nights, and any creative writing events that happened were through the playwriting class to allow the Acting department's drama ensemble perform their pieces.
SCPA allows themselves to be seen as extremely connected to the arts, as they are, unless you aren't a performing arts major, then there's really no "shine" for you. The dance department is very tainting to ones career, speaking from experience. If you don't fit that stereotypical ballerina look, there won't be much fairness to the roles you receive. The academics and arts are not balanced at all. If you focus on one, you sacrifice the other. The facade of being able to balance both when there isn't any communication between academics and arts faculty is ridiculous.
This school has a very positive and acceptive environment! Students and staff here give you the space and support needed to find and express yourself! Everyone here is free to be themselves no matter how "different" and "odd" they may feel. The only thing is that the staff doesn't communicate very well with it's students and guardians which can be difficult when trying to receive important information or trying to get some changes implemented in the schooling system. This bad communication has put somewhat of a wedge between the students and staff making it harder for students to respect the faculty who don't always respect them as the individuals that they are. However, if having a good relationship with your school's faculty is not a main concern for you, then SCPA is an amazing community and home!
