We're Getting a Middle School!

One hundred and thirty years after our founding, we're expanding our program to include middle school! Just like our long-standing progressive high school program, Scattergood's middle school will incorporate hands-on learning, organic farm experience, and a rotating work crew program... specially geared for the unique social, emotional, and educational needs of early adolescence.

Academics are good (although some teachers have grading policies that decide the grade a student gets solely based on attendance rather than merit, which is questionable). There is a clique problem, and there are problems with the administration that don't feel like they're fully addressed. Days are long and feel overscheduled (required events run from 8:40am to 9:15pm, which is very tiring for students). I've made good friendships here and staff/student relationships can be great, but there's a lot of problems here that need to be addressed.

Scattergood is a safe environment. There is an onsite nurse and Doctor. More serious medical issues can be handled at the doctors office or hospital nearby.

They do not tolerate bad behavior, such as bullying, by anyone. The staff and students meet very regularly to discuss concerns, issues, academic and school activities. The students are taught to self-advocate and using problem solving skills to resolve problems. They are also encouraged to talk to staff when they cannot work things out. The school has created an atmosphere where staff are all approachable and they handle every issue coming their way.
This school creates an environment where teenagers thrive. The sense of community responsibility pervades all aspects of school life. Not only are they helping clean, prepare meals and shovel snow, where else can students plant the farm and help with farm animals? Scattergood offers unique and exciting trips which students will have no where else, such as a week of community service in Chicago, Freedom School in St. Louis, cross-country skiing in the boundary waters and traveling to Bolivia, just to name a few. the diversity of this student population is second to none, which is so important when students explore and discuss school and social issues/subjects.

Not only would I send my daughter here again, I wish she could have spent more than just the short time she did. The values instilled and knowledge gained will impact her life forever.
