Savanna High School is an extremely diverse and culturally aware campus. However, academics and focus on the students is not a top priority. There is a lack of motivation from both students and teachers to be educated and to teach. One positive thing that I've noticed is that there's encouragement towards the performing arts. I've also seen that the students immerse themselves in school spirit by participating in spirit days, volunteering clubs, and supporting our school teams.

Although some teachers at this school are very kind and genuinely do care about their students, there are some teachers who could care less. In some of my classes, the teachers do not teach and would mainly make their students work on assignments that they found online. On the other hand, many of the students here do drugs, drink underage, get pregnant, and get in lots of fights. There was also many incidents where there were shooting threats, and bombing threats. On the bright side, there are some benefits to going to this school. Since we are living in a poor area, our AP exams are only $5, and we get other special treatment for our financial situation.
What I like most about Savanna are the friendships I’ve developed throughout my 4 years there. Participating in sports has made me more open to trying new thing as and becoming more disciplined. The amount of educational resources the district has afforded to prepare students to be college and career ready has been very beneficial.
The only suggestion I would make is to see more diversity in the teaching staff and student population. It seems the staff doesn’t mirror the demographics of the student population. Which makes it difficult for teachers to understand different cultures. In my 4 years at Savanna I’ve noticed the district has made a concerted effort to be sensitive in understanding the importance of removing the confederate icon and flags from the school grounds. This has made a huge impact on the positive side for the school. I only hope this momentum continues for years to come.
