While the school I attended had strong academics and a supportive environment, it was unfortunately in poor condition both visually and in terms of infrastructure. This was particularly noticeable in some of the older buildings on campus, which had visible signs of disrepair and seemed to be in need of renovations or upgrades. Despite this, the school did its best to provide a high-quality education to its students, and I was able to receive a solid foundation in my field of study. However, it was also clear that many of the students at the school were there primarily for the purpose of earning college credits, rather than truly engaging with the material and seeking a deeper understanding. This seemed to create a somewhat superficial atmosphere on campus, as students were more focused on achieving good grades and meeting requirements than on truly immersing themselves in their studies and pursuing their passions.
San Mateo High School is the most welcoming, inclusive, and safe zoned high schools there is to offer in my opinion. The community is very diverse there, and everyone is very supportive of each other, from the peers to the staff and teachers!
San Mateo High School is not what I expected. When I first enrolled I thought I was going to be surrounded by a bunch of theater kids and hate it. But as soon as I walked in on orientation, my view of the school changed so much. Everyone is so happy and kind to one another, it inspires you to also be kind. The teachers I've had at San Mateo are very kind, helpful, and supportive however there is a handful who don't seem to care or be qualified to teach at all. The sense of community in San Mateo is unmatched as the school's spirit is definitely the best in the district. Not only does San Mateo have a good performing arts program, but an excellent biotech program that helps students get internships and jobs when they graduate. As regards college readiness, the school is good at preparing students as many students get into amazing colleges such as UCLA, Berkeley, UPenn, and many more.
