My high school experience was good, but I believe that it could have been better. I went through high school attending some advanced placement classes which somewhat helped me prepare for college however, the other classes that were not advanced sometimes lacked in academics. Moreover, since my former high school is greatly populated with Hispanic students and students who cross the border everyday to attend school, the English language is not one of our strongest assets. I wish that teachers were more strict when it came to teaching so that students pay more attention and learn the material that is being taught.
Overall, there should be some changes made in the way the curriculum is taught because I feel that it does not prepare students enough for higher education.

San Luis High School is the only high school in my border town. It has a huge amount of students compare to other schools in the district, the reason for this is because we also have kids who live in Mexico come to our school. We have an amazing time at school due to the fact that probably 80% of students are hispanics and that we assimilate with everyone, we make sure to include anyone at what we are doing. We have a lot of pride and courage to be successful. We have a crisis on the education side, we have a lot of long term substitute teachers, and teachers who aren't completely qualified to teach certain subject. At SLHS, clubs, sports and extracurricular activities play a huge role on our identity, we have a big percentage of people who are involved. Speaking of safety, SLHS isnt the best, we have had 1 bomb threat, 2 gun threats, many fire alarm pranks, several cases of kids overdosing or selling of drugs. We are ashamed that this has happened but its true.
I believe that high school is what you make out of it. During my almost 4 years of being in San Luis, I have seen different stories and different outcomes. This school is 99% latino population, next to the border. There are plenty of students who come to this high school not knowing what to do not caring, not knowing anything about how much opportunities they can get if they just look for them. But there are also the ones who care about the possibilities that this school may offer. It may not be the best school of the district, but it is a place that will give you success if you try to look for it. regional and state placer in sports, national officers, AP students, talented kids. San Luis High School opened a lot of doors for me, my experience has been excellent. I'm planning on attending an State university, getting out of my hometown and that's because I have been motivated by the San Luis staff. As long as you put your mind in the right place, this is an excellent school.
