Sam Barlow High School offers many opportunities to receive college credit while in high school, and has a staff that is dedicated to seeing their students succeed. Our women's soccer program has also been the best Barlow has seen in years! My experience at Barlow however, is much different than that of diverse students. Sam Barlow is predominately white, with increasing diversity that comes from the younger classes. As Barlow shifts to become a more diverse school, there has not been much change in staff to represent the students of Barlow. The nickname for our school is "cow pie high", and within the doors of cow pie high lies a lot of racism. In the midst of the BLM movement, I would expect our school to value diversity and representation of ALL more than ever. Until Sam Barlow is a sanctuary for all, I cannot say I am proud to be a Bruin.
During my time at Sam Barlow, I have formed countless positive relationships with teachers I have and staff I meet around the building. Most of my instructors stand out in their abilities of encouragement and their overall want for student success.
In terms of environment, Sam Barlow's recently finished renovation has provided a beautiful facility to learn in. Updates to science and technology classrooms as well as the overall aesthetic of the building have made coming to school more enjoyable. Sporting events in the brand new stadium and gymnasium rack up lots of school spirit, as well.
The student body at Barlow has a considerable amount of problems. There is a large amount of disrespect towards other students, school property, and especially staff members. Sometimes the atmosphere of the building feels fairly negative and unenjoyable.

It was not a bad school since it has lots of opportunities to try different electives and the teachers are nice and can accommodate your situation. The only problem is that it's not really diverse and could work harder on the situation with the bathrooms. Lots of kids use those bathrooms to vape (and do drugs obviously) and there are times when people are smoking marijuana and leave the gym locker rooms submerged in the stench. It's a good school academically and with extra-curricular but it lacks in conduct for the actions the students take. With that being said I have actually held great relationships with my teachers and they have made my high school experience here memorable. Still, if you are looking to shield your child/yourself from an environment like this I recommend you do so. Now compared to other schools Sam Barlow High School is the best in the district so keep that in mind as well. Overall I enjoyed the experience it was just so annoying about the bad behavior going on.
