Country Day is a great school to prepare students for college academic success. However it will not necessarily prepare their students for social, mental or emotional health. The administration and parents shelter the students way too much from the world around them and put way too much pressure on the students to have the highest GPAs. I would not recommend this school for someone who is not wealthy and caucasian because the Country Day environment and school culture are basically set up to make only the rich white students thrive academically. This school does not do a good job of exposing its students the world outside of Country Day, especially when it comes to the history curriculum. In addition, the administration, faculty, and student body are really lacking in socioeconomic and ethnic diversity. Then again Country Day costs as much as it does for a reason.

I spent three years in the high school, and my overall experience here was definitely better than what it would have been in a large public school or one of the other private schools in the Sacramento area. However, that does not go out without saying there weren't/aren't problems. When I began attending here, it appeared that everything was fine, but I probably just didn't hear about any issues. The next year is when I began to notice that the focus of the school was shifting and we may be spending money a tad recklessly. Specifically, I will address two issues. Starting in my second year here, I began to notice that the school's focus was shifting towards athletics instead of academics and the arts, putting them at an unfair disadvantage. The gym, which was a little rundown before but not in bad condition by any means (it was built in the '80s), went under a large renovation. Meanwhile, the multi-purpose room, which has/had a rat problem, barely has a stage/green room for Drama, and has a neglected kitchen remained untouched. While other independent schools have glamorous theatres and state-of-the-art kitchens, SCDS does not. In addition, just recently, the Board of Trustees first decided to cut funding for Breakthrough Sacramento (an incredible program SCDS sponsors) by half, and then remove the sponsorship for it entirely, leaving the program without a school to work out of during the summers. For 22 years, the school was able to be the sponsor, but all of a sudden we can't afford it? Most (if not all) SCDS high school students are very upset with the decision (many volunteer/teach for the program during the summer). Overall, though, my three years here were very good and influential. I would be cautious, though, as I have no idea what the future of this school will bring.
My kid has been a student at Sacrament Country Day School for 11 years, started since Kindergarten. This is one of the best schools in the area. Children learn and grow in a supportive and nurturing environment. Kids are being challenged. Teachers are dedicated to teach, and students are eager to learn. The SAT scores of this school speaks for itself. The school prepares students to be well rounded and more than ready for college. I will recommend this school to anyone without reservation.
