In terms of academics, River Hill is second to none. Generally excellent teachers (particularly in upper level mathematics, chemistry, and fine arts), but there are also departments that are lackluster in comparison (physics, social studies). The culture is uber-competitive in terms of college admission, but students always tend to pursue the clubs and extracurriculars that they so choose. Possibly the best sports school in Howard County, in particular with the soccer, football, xc/track, and tennis teams. The main complaint I have with River Hill is the administration; possibly the most inept, disliked part by students, particuarly in that two of the more liked assistant principals left River Hill a few years ago. Also, safety and mental health is not a priority here and is not emphasized by administration.

River Hill is an ok school with no culture. We barely have school traditions and the basic spirit weeks we have are only participated in by the juniors and seniors. Did I mention that one of those spirit days was Country vs. Country Club day? Like what even is that? There’s barely any diversity in the school, you’ll look around and see white people and Asian people and maybe the occasional black person. The black people in the school are either whitewashed or outcasted so you know, take your pick. The teachers are nothing special, though some of them believe they’re on the level of college professors. That being said, there are definitely some really good teachers at the school, but not enough that everyone will experience them or that the ones who need the help of an experienced teacher will get one. The school has plenty of problems that could be addressed with that additional boosters money they receive every year but no progress is being made.
River Hill is an extremely well known school for their academics throughout Howard County. Although my school’s academics are great, they do not overpower those of other schools in Howard County like others may think. I believe that River Hill has a great reputation and that sometimes sways the opinions of others when viewing the schools. Some teachers in River Hill are not great, and actually are not especially certified to be filling the role that they are in. Additionally, the extremely competitive atmosphere of River Hill only harms the students’ abilities to learn.
