    West Michigan Aviation Academy

    • Grand Rapids, MI
    • 44 reviews
Senior:This school is amazing! There are many many opportunities to further your education and experiences in life. We are very STEM and aviation focused. The staff and faculty is amazing. The aviation department is very professional and teaches us respect and gets us ready for the future in whatever career we choose. The staff work their butts off to make sure we succeed and we can go to them for anything school related. This school offers many clubs such as RC flying, drama, robotics, and music clubs. We are a newer school so there are many opportunities to start many new clubs. This year alone we started close to 5 new clubs.

    Black River Public School

    • Holland, MI
    • 71 reviews
Junior:Black River Public School is pretty awesome. It's challenging and offers many opportunities for students to better themselves whether it be in sports, math, politics, art, music, or anything else they might be interested in. Financial support is helpful too if the student can't afford some of the activities available.
I love it at Black River, because it has given me so many ways to study things I'm interested in along with the core classes. I can always ask for help if I fall behind and the school spirit is great. The classes are challenging and get more so every year, as the school prepares us for college, but when we finish our exams and head into the month of Project Term, we know it's worth it.

    Arbor Preparatory High School

    • Ypsilanti, MI
    • 44 reviews
Senior:Arbor is a great stepping stone for students wanting to go to college. The academics are amazing and the staff are generally helpful and nice. The only bad thing about the school is that they sometimes treat the students as small children. Rules are rather strict, we can't leave or get up during lunch, we have to wipe the tables down, wear uniforms, no phones, no PDA. The staff also tends to be kind of like a revolving door. Many teachers come and go every year- sometimes in the middle of the year- so there isn't much stability there. Overall I enjoyed my experience at Arbor Prep, although it may not be for everyone.

    Grand River Prep

    • Grand Rapids, MI
    • 167 reviews
Senior:Grand River Prep is a great school! I have been here for four years and wouldn't trade it for the world. The teachers are easy to connect with and understand because they are fairly young. The academics are rigorous, but the challenge of AP classes are worth it if you take them seriously and pass the AP exam. There are a lot of electives and sports that are offered and these are great ways that the student body connects to create community. Overall the atmosphere of the school is inviting with students of many backgrounds coming together to make a great place for learning

    Washtenaw Technical Middle College

    • Ann Arbor, MI
    • 104 reviews
Alum:WTMC was a great school. It allowed me to pursue my career in high school by allowing me to attend college classes that would transfer to a four year college. Being in college, but still having the support of the high school teachers and staff helped me make sure that I was ready for college and knowledgeable of what to do on my own to insure my success at a university after graduation. The only thing that I missed was the sports, but getting involved with community sports was helpful. Not having to go to school on Fridays was fun too!

    Wellspring Preparatory High School

    • Grand Rapids, MI
    • 77 reviews
High School Junior:If I had to choose one word to describe Wellspring, it would be 'pushy.' The teachers push you to succeed, the parents push you to attend, the students push you through the hallways. There's always a forward motion going on, but not in a bad way. Wellspring is a good school for preparing you for college. The classes are difficult; at least a C- in every class is required to graduate, and each student must take at least 2 Advanced Placement courses. But that doesn't mean the teachers don't offer help. Every single day, after school on either Tuesday or Thursday, the teacher will be there for tutoring in their classroom. It's challenging but fair, and the teachers are always finding ways to improve their classes.

As for the students, I will never cease to be amazed at how incredibly diverse we are. There are all kinds of students at Wellspring, and there are no overly noticeable cliques. I've heard some stories of hardship from my friends, but I personally have never been bullied, never seen any worse behavior than belligerence towards the teachers and swearing in the hallways. And there could definitely be worse crimes, considering that this is high school.

Overall, I would recommend Wellspring Prep. It's an extremely unique school with a good curriculum guided by caring staff.

    Merritt Academy

    • New Haven, MI
    • 33 reviews
Senior:Since starting Merritt Academy in Kindergarden the school has expanded a lot, many things for the better. The teachers and staff are always there to look out after the students and know them on a personal level. If there is something wrong they are always willing to be an ear to talk to if you need to get something off of your chest. Not only that in the past few years the academics have excelled as well as the sports programs. This helps the students prepare for college and learn about what is out in the real world. Not only does the school teach us about the core activities it teaches us life long morals and skills that we will need in society. Out of all these good things something that is improving, but could be better is the technology.

High School Senior:The classes moves at a fast pace which makes the classes have more time for reviewing for real life. Instead of many tests, there are quizzes that happen in each class once or more a week.

Niche User:WMAES is a great school that offers such a wonderful change of pace for kids who are used to "typical" schools. The attitude seems more laid back and the teachers, for the most part, are well versed in how to integrate kids who are "different" into the mainstream classrooms.

    Concord Academy of Petoskey

    • Petoskey, MI
    • 8 reviews
Senior:I started going to Concord in the middle of my sophomore year. I had been home-schooled all my life before that, and I wasn't used to people, so it was hard at first. But I had teachers who genuinely cared about my education and my success in life, and they pushed me to do better than I really wanted to at times. I love it here and I'm grateful to have been put here.

Senior:I have went to Crossroads Charter Academy for twelve years. I would highly recommend attending this school if you want a quality education. What I really loved about this school was how small the classes are. With having small classes you really learn a lot and your teacher really care about you and want to see you excel. Going to a school like crossroads really gives you a second family that loves you. We have excellent teachers and a great facility. One thing that I didn't particularly like was that we had to a wear a uniform.

Once I found Niche, everything just became much more easier and now I am able to apply for many scholarships all through Niche. Nothing really comes to mind when asked what could change; everything is great.

    Star International Academy

    • Dearborn Heights, MI
    • 90 reviews
Junior:I have been in Star International Academy for three years, and I can honestly say they were wonderful! Star focuses greatly on the academics on students, and offers many programs and help to those with unsatisfactory grades. Teachers, as well, are stupendous! Star also offers many prep programs for College, including Kaplan, in preparation for the SAT. The school is also very strict on safety and regulations, it has been awarded Michigan's safest school multiple times! Parents are also very involved in many decisions the school makes, as they do care about their opinions on certain manners. Star is a wonderful environment, with many unique individuals, who are all loving and caring. I can gladly say that I feel as though the Academy is like a family to me. The school offers many resources, a wonderful faculty and administration, and a better environment than many schools in general. Go Star!

    Summit Academy North High School

    • Huron Township, MI
    • 46 reviews
Niche User:You can tell the parents really care when they enroll kids at Summit, if needed, parents can reach out to teachers and come up with the best way to achieve there kids goals. I remember when I was sick for sometime, my mom and I were able to sit with all the teachers and come up with the best plan to help me stay on track even after missing a couple weeks of school. My teachers were all very willing to give me the extra time I needed with them to make sure my grades stayed on track.

I feel in a larger or public school I wouldn't have had the extra one on one I was able to get a Summit. Its hard to find a school with so many teachers who are so dedicated to there careers and kids they teach.

Alum:The people at The Midland Academy, both the students and staff, are some of the nicest you'll ever meet. The small class sizes allow students to make friends with all of our classmates--there really weren't any cliques when I attended. The environment as a whole was always warm and inviting.

However, the quality of academics varied widely depending on the subject. Some of the teachers really knew what they were talking about; others did the bare minimum and didn't convey much of a point.

Also, they talk up their college acceptance rates quite a bit (100%), but the only reason it's that high is because they twist your arm to apply for colleges. Don't get me wrong, I think it's important to go to college, but at that age, I didn't care and they didn't give me reason to. I wish they had focused more on why we should go to college instead of telling us we needed to apply "or else."

    Michigan Connections Academy

    • Okemos, MI
    • 36 reviews
Senior:This school has taught me that education is something to be celebrated not dreaded, as seen in many high schools across America. MICA has prepared me thoroughly for college/university with care and patience. Many of the teachers check up on the students to see how they're doing, while also constantly helping students improve their understanding of certain concepts in lessons. Some teachers will even sit with one student for 30+ minutes explaining a concept in many different ways over and over again until the student understands it. However, there are some teachers don't feel the need to check up on students because the students' coursework is online. The use of mostly e-books rather than physical texts books strains many students' eyes, which does not assist in a healthy learning environment for students.

Senior:Michigan Math and Science Academy has help me mold myself into a beautiful young lady ready to conquer a successful future. MMSA is a kindergarten through 12 school ran more like a family. The genuine love, care and protection delivered by the staff is incomparable to any other. In struggling to find myself, MMSA collectively stayed involved in my life to make sure that I was making choices for success that would carry me through and beyond high school. They saw potential in me that I did not always give myself credit for. They did so by staying on top of me, checking my bad habits, challenging me academically, and reminding me of the end goal when I seemed to be getting off track. Leaving MMSA will be one of the hardest things I will ever face. I have gained unrealistic skill, knowledge and support.
