During my experience attending Rainier Beach High School, I quickly learned to appreciate how enriched we are with culture and diversity. I have always viewed RBHS as a home rather than a school, due to my long history within the Rainier Beach community. I grew up in the school itself and am beyond grateful for all of the memories and the sense of belonging it brought me. For those looking for a second home, Rainier Beach is the place to go. Not only do those who attend reflect the longstanding population of the community it serves but the staff in this building truly care and are willing to stay alongside you until you reach the finish line. Often, when students who have had unpleasant experiences at other school's Rainier Beach is the place they come to, to get back on their feet and I believe Rainier Beach High School is more than a safe haven or village but also a place that cultivates a 'diamond in the rough'.
Rainier Beach High School is a powerhouse in athletics, but its academics is underdeveloped. Our basketball team is extraordinary, so basketball games are the most popular and lucrative events at our school. Some staff members are very supportive and attentive of their students, but many of these staff members have left the school due to a downgrade in the administration staff (courtesy of the Seattle Public School district). The student body is very diverse, with the majority being African-American. The students are extremely lax and unmotivated, which fosters an atmosphere that will make it difficult for anyone to learn effectively.
I am currently a Junior at Rainier Beach and I've loved my entire high school experience. With each class, our school continues to build a legacy in the Southend community in Seattle. Being one of the most diverse schools in the district and facing a high amount of adversities, we have overcome many obstacles throughout my time here because of the determination and passion of our staff and students. RB students have the highest number of Adverse Childhood Experiences, yet we have an 80% graduation rate. We have teachers who are determined to see the success of our students and their personal endeavors. I am so proud to call Beach my home and claim the Viking mascot.
