Queens High School for the Sciences at York College Reviews
Rating 3.78 out of 5 213 reviews
This school is amazing in terms of academics and college readiness as there are some amazing teachers and guidance counselors. Student safety is pretty good too. However, the glaring issue is with the current administration. They do not take into consideration the student at all, instead they are motivated by their own goal of making the school’s stats seem “better”, often at the expense of the student. Many of the students here are overworked and sleep deprived as a result. The administration makes teachers teach classes that aren’t their speciality which, in turn, is hard on the student. There is a high teacher turnover rate; almost all the good teachers have left and the newly appointed teachers are inadequate in teaching their respective classes and nothing really comes out from their class. We don’t even get anymore printed worksheets as there is an “issue” with the printing. In short, I do sincerely believe that this school has potential if not for the current administration.
I do not know what qhss was like pre 2019. Principal changed 4-5 years ago. There is no enrichment here now. Barely even for the science and math departments. We had no active math or robotics team until this year. Budget cuts led to many competitive teams such as debate and model UN pulling out of competitive leagues. We have barely any trips, no sports teams so no major events, everyday was just 8-3 school and go home study and do homework until 12am and go to sleep. The only thing i had to look forward to were my friends, but even that is hard to come around here because it is so divided into cliques. Lab materials are outdated, ventilation in the school sucks so it smells rancid in the warmer months, theres no school spirit, theres not even a real lunchroom. Its a room in the basement converted into a "cafeteria". Kids here don't succeed from school's help. It's all our own hard work. Drugs are a problem here like anywhere.
First I would like to mention that this school is a small community. At around 500 students this community is closely bonded and we all help each other around. However something I would like to mention is that out queens high school for the sciences is partner with York College. This means that we share some of the same buildings. To prevent any interference with the college students there are security measures. Overall, my experience was great and many of the teachers and faculties will help you throughout your time there.
