Punahou is a great school with a vast network and resources to help students achieve their goals. The education is very hands on and project oriented. We learn important Social Emotional skills like communication and collaboration from Kindergarten by working with other students. In high school, our schedules are much like college in that you may have a two hour break, depending on your classes, to complete homework, meet with teachers, or meet with a student tutor. After school, there are at least 20 clubs you can join that are run by students and an advisor. These clubs range from the Red Cross to Dungeons and Dragons! Every one of Punahou's teachers are committed to helping you become smarter, but also a better person. Punahou does however, have from cliques and sometimes overly competitive students. Other than that, my experience at Punahou has been excellent!
Punahou School is an incredibly supportive institution that is ready to provide you with the resources, guidance, and opportunities that you seek. The key here, though, is that you must take initiative in order to make the most of your time here. It's a big school with a lot to offer and you can choose to sit back and let it fly by or explore the incredible arts and theatre opportunities, sports offerings, robotics and engineering programs, advanced classes, and much more. Practice asking for what you need and Punahou may grant it to you!
Academically, Punahou School is strong. Teachers are engaged and genuinely care about students, while course offerings include a variety of Honors/AP/interdisciplinary options. As an institution, though, the school is held back by history and bureaucracy. While individual administrators are usually kind and helpful, the administration as a whole is stifling and seemingly incapable of change. Punahou has repeatedly shown that they’re unable to accurately or publicly address the colonialism and racism that led to the founding of the school, and the administration tends to prioritize reputation and public perception over actually doing things. Still, I have a lot of respect for almost all the people I’ve gotten to know at this school, and I have hope that things will move in a positive direction.
