Public Academy for Performing Arts Reviews
Rating 3.71 out of 5 52 reviews
Public Academy for Performing Arts is a great place to pursue your desired performing art whether it is music, choir, dance, film, art or theatre. Getting college prep education from middle school to high school surrounded by students with the same admiration for the arts creates a beautiful, friendly, and creative environment and makes education less overwhelming. In my experience, the best part of this school is the opportunities to discover your true passion and commiting to be the highest standard in that field. I would say the worst parts of my experience would be the lack of funding we had in each program. This held me back from reaching the true potential of each performing art. I also felt our building was to small to hold both middle school and high school students. Overall Public Academy for Performing Arts prepared me for college and the life of a professional artist.
Public Academy for Preforming Arts has allowed me to expand in what I am passionate in. With their LGBTQ+ community and small campus, I have felt very safe and connected with everyone around me. PAPA also has a very great jazz, hip-hop, and choir community that I am apart of. I have also found talent in literature and poetry well going there and love how poet laureates have visited and demonstrated poetry, as well as warehouse 508/505 having had workshops with us; not only towards poetry but also hip-hop dance and other forms of performing arts. Not only is it a great school for self identity, but also has amazing opportunities with scouts coming to judge our talent, and as well as their good college prep efforts. An example that first came to mind is our all girls choir—Les Chanteuse (which I’m apart of) making state 2022, 2023, as well as winning a gold metal at Carnegie Hall, New York Elite Music Festival 2023. Through all the ups and downs at PAPA, I’m glad I got to experience it.
The school does a great job of combining the arts and academics. However, the arts aren't nearly as funded as they should be in comparison to other arts, favoritism is at play in the arts departments. Academics are fine, they offer dual credit enrollment through CNM to get ahead in college.
