Prior Lake High School is in an affluent school district, which warrants an education better than most. Opportunities for college credit and alternate options for classes are abundant, extracurriculars are well-funded, and teachers are qualified. Rigorous AP classes prepared me incredibly well and I am currently maintaining a 4.0 college GPA. I also participated in both theatre and choir, which had ample opportunities such as voice lessons through the school, performing at festivals, and auditioning for honor choirs. The theatre program is a community that I found solace and my forever friends in, even after I graduated. Mental health resources and treatment of struggling students, overall, isn't great, but if you seek external help, you're golden.
As a graduate of Prior Lake High School, my time spent here was interesting to say the least. The main thing to note was the racism that surrounded the school. Its environment, study body, and the thoughtless faculty contributed to the reasoning as to why the school name will forever be tainted. During my senior year here, you could not go a single quarter of school without a scandal involving something racist. The school only "scolded" students and barely dealt with the problem at hand. Students, especially the BIPOC kids, were left feeling neglected in a setting that should be focused on education and making high school experiences. Thankfully, I have seen some students, parents, and teachers who care enough to fight for a change. Hopefully that small group of people will set up a better school so that the younger generations don't have to worry over the treatment they will receive because some white people can't keep their racist thoughts and actions to themselves.
Prior Lake High School has an amazing atmosphere, phenomenal teachers, and a wide variety of resources tailored to help students learn what they're passionate about. There are dozens of elective to choose from and a club for pretty much anything a student could thing of. However, there is an environment that has been created since COVID that gives underclassmen students the impression that it is okay to discriminate against minorities at Prior Lake. There have been multiple accounts, one that even appeared on the news, of students saying racial slurs or making racial comments towards members of our black community, and they think it is okay. I wish Prior Lake administration would take more initiative to make it clear to students that actions like that are unacceptable.
