I like the small, tight-knit community feel of the school. I can go talk to my teachers casually and easily. Everyone knows everybody, which can sometimes be a down-side, but it creates a more welcoming environment. One of the things I would change, however, is to get rid of some of the strict, unnecessary rules and/or expectations.
My experience at PHS was phenomenal. My favorite part of the school is how small the class sizes were which ensured more one on one time with the teachers. In addition I had the same teachers from seventh grade all the way to my senior year. This created an amazing rapport which allowed me to feel comfortable and confident in my studies and my relationships with my teachers. It truly felt like the teachers and staff cared for me and my well being. Other schools the students are just numbers or you have to truly stand out to be recognized and remembered by teachers but at PHS every teacher knew your name and cared whether you succeeded or not. I graduated four years ago and to this day when I see my old teacher they still know my name and even remember what college I am attending. The teachers and staff are the reason I loved my high school experience. The world needs more teachers like the ones at PHS.
In the years I have attended Portola High School, I have seen many improvements to your classrooms and buildings. For example, the school remodeled an old classroom. New floors, whiteboards, and desktops were installed. Classrooms got new desks, tables, whiteboards and chairs. The school also bought several sets of laptops for student use and new computers for the library. Portola High School is a close community where everyone knows each other and gets along. My experience at Portola High School has been very good and I will always appreciate the teachers and staff because they really care about their students well-being and safety.
