Portland High school has given me a good base to begin further studies later at a University. The staff is very kind and helpful as well as clearly dedicated to what they are teaching. The support system at the high school has helped me throughout my four years attending the school. While the education has been amazing, some of the student body has made my journey through the school difficult. Portland is a very secluded community with not much diversity and consequently an ignorant student body. Through the years to come I hope the attitudes of some of the students changes, but overall my experience with Portland high school has been positive.
My experience of my freshman year at Portland High School has been overall alright. The teachers that I have had so far have all been very kind and understanding people. There are many learning opportunities at both normal and advanced paces and a large variety of extracurricular activities. Some things I would like to see changes in is the behavior of the students, I feel at some points that when students disrupt the class, it is not the teacher's fault. Another thing I would like to see a change in is the separation of the well behaving from the misbehaving students attending the school. This is because I for one care a great deal about my grades and education, however, this is not the case for everyone. Especially when only a few people are disrupting the class and not allowing the teacher to do their job, it slows down the learning process and limits what the teacher and rest of the class can do.
I have had a relatively decent experience throughout my years at Portland High School. I enjoy the variety of options for classes offered at Portland High. I have many opportunities to experience different learning styles. I also appreciate many of the staff members that have helped me succeed throughout my years here. Though I value many areas of Portland High I would like to see a change in student advocacy and continue the change of bringing awareness to mental health. After losing two students tragically to suicide I am very passionate about this. I believe student advocacy is also very important because it allows students to be heard and understood. I think if staff and students understood each other better the environment at Portland High School would improve immensely.
