The staff and faculty go the extra mile for my kids. The academic rigor and diversity of clubs and activities is excellent. Students have many opportunities to join groups and athletics and a lot of support from the school. I feel that the students are ready for the independence of college and life as an engaged citizen when they graduate. There is a lot of student input and student voice is taken to heart, therefore a lot of changes to the age-old systems have taken place in recent years. The art department is always doing cool things and the math team consistently wins. The High School Quiz Show team has made it to the final rounds on MPBS for years! It's a well-rounded school where there is a place for all types of kids and interests. That's been our experience.

PHS is a very typical high school. There are some amazing teachers here but others that are definitely subpar. Sports teams are very hot and cold with some sports going into championships while others don't even win a game. There are a lot of clubs and administration is always open to creation of new ones. The food at school isn't great, pretty standard for a public high school, but the ability to go off campus in downtown portland is a definite plus.To me, it seems that there is more school spirit among teachers than students. Depending on the classes you take, you can have a very rigorous course load and push yourself with higher-level classes but there are still plenty of opportunities to take easier classes. Overall, I think the biggest issue is the racial divide. There is a diverse student body but you would never know by walking into just one class. In the cafeteria, in classrooms, in the opportunities availible, there is a divide based on race and cultural background.
Phs is a great place to be! My favorite thing is our location and open campus. Students can go out to lunch in downtown Portland. Teachers are willing to provide help if needed, and there is a lot of school spirit! Especially during Spirit Week. Sometimes I wish the student body was more heard by the administration, but they are working towards improving this.
