Great athletics. Great academics. School is safe to attend. The counselors are always available and willing to help a student out. We have a therapy dog on campus. Lots of great resources for kids with special needs. The library is stock full. We have school of choice in our school district, and most kids will choose our school over others. We have a brand new middle school building, a brand new swimming/diving center, brand new football/track stadium, etc. Student parking is plenty. Go Huskies!
Walking into Portage Northern every day, I feel as though I'm being exposed to vigorous academics. I took 6 IB classes last year and now have 5 IB's and 1 Ap class. The school offers various programs such as the IB Diploma, EFE, EFA, and college classes for their students in order to offer opportunities to further their education past simple high school classes. Many of the teachers that I've had show that they genuinely care about the lives and futures of their students. Although there are certain aspects of the school that I feel need change, I believe that this is common and does not out-weigh the positives. Times are simply changing and it takes time for schools to adjust. This is understandable. I'm grateful that I was lucky enough to grow up in a district with such amazing schools and be able to walk out of my k-12 years feeling prepared for the future.
I am proud to be a Portage Northern Huskie. There are numerous clubs available for people of diverse interests, beliefs, and backgrounds; overall, it is an inclusive environment. Northern is also one of the few schools in Michigan that teach IB Latin as a course. Our school newspaper, the Northern Wipe, is both entertaining and refreshing with its interview, jokes, positive encouragement, and up-to-date news. I feel thoroughly challenged by IB courses, and have maintained a close relationship with my counselor about my future for the past four years. Our media center also provides lots of privileged online resources such as JSTOR for in-depth research. Unfortunately, I have heard average comments about the cafeteria food, and given the circumstances, Northern has a procedure for school-shootings that I wish were not necessary. However, the teachers are role models in life for most of us. Lastly, the grandeur of our school spirit at rallies and sports games would be difficult to beat!
