My son recently started here this week (It's mid-march, so he started late) in Young-5's. So far I've appreciated the school and the way it's set up. We haven't been there long enough to give a real review, but here are some things I've noticed. The pick-up and drop-off system is very efficient. I see the principal and deans helping outside in it too, I appreciate they share in the 'dirty' work. They bring big kids into the younger classes to help with reading, and have big kids help the little ones get from the classes to the cars, which I thought was wonderful. Every student that I've interacted with has been respectful and courteous. My brother is a high school teacher, and has also taught elementary and middle school in the metro Detroit and Birmingham areas, and the stories he has of disrespectful students and administrations that won't deal with behavioral issues are crazy. We put our son in this school hoping to avoid that, and so far it's off to a great start.
We had 2 kids going to Plymouth Scholars Charter Academy. We started around 6 years ago when we moved into that area, and were very excited and hopeful with this school. Our experience as parents as well as our kids feedback was not positive.. The quality started to go downhill more so during the past 3 years when our kids were in middle school. Number of student behavioral issues not getting addressed, and certain parents kept getting favorable treatment due to which they felt some sense of entitlement around the school affairs. Teacher turnover is a big issue, our kids were not directly impacted, but many of their friends from previous school years expressed big frustration over teachers leaving at that high rate. There are several excellent schools in the area and based on our experience, we finally made the decision to transfer to another school.
I used to go to this school. Last year was, thankfully, the end of middle school for me. In 6th grade, I was bullied and there was so much drama in the public school I went to. My mom wanted me to go to Plymouth scholars for a fresh start, where I would finally make some friends and get the academics I needed. I realized my predictions were very wrong. You get bullied if you aren’t popular or aren’t the smartest person in the class. I was also harassed in a terrible manner at this school. Turnover is high. Some teachers are rude and middle school has no freedom. The academics and lower-school programs are good, just make sure to NOT send your children to the middle school.
